“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” II Corinthians 5:17

In the margin of my Bible, the phrase “he is a new creature” is interpreted as “let him be a new creature.”  How great it would be if when we repent of our sins, take on the name of Jesus in baptism and receive the Holy Spirit in our lives, that suddenly we would become perfect.  However, we still have our flesh to contend with and must daily submit to the Spirit in order to live the way Jesus wants us to.

Becoming a new creature takes some effort and work on our part.  There are disciplines we must follow in order to change the way we live and act.  This includes taking time every day to communicate with the Lord by Bible reading and prayer.  We must keep our hearts and minds open to the leading of the Spirit to show us the areas in our lives that we need to change.  As we earnestly seek the Lord, we will find our lives becoming more like Him, gradually changing into the new creature He desires us to be.  There will be many failures along the way, but His grace is sufficient, and we can rest assured that He has begun a good work in us and that He is able to complete it.

Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, that you have begun a good work in our lives, and that you are daily working on us to make us what you want us to be.
