“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth

not; and it shall be given him.” James 1:5

James is telling us that no matter what circumstances we find ourselves in, we have someone we can go to who will show us exactly what we need to get us through the situation.  Friends may not be sympathetic to our requests for help and advice, but the Lord will not make us feel intimidated even if we are seeking His help for small and inconsequential things.

Later in his epistle James tells us what the wisdom of God is like. This is the first of seven devotions covering the attributes of God’s wisdom as set forth in James 3:17

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.” James 3:17

PURE

When Jesus was teaching in what we call the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5, Verse 8 says, “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.”  All of us should desire to be pure in heart.  When we first came to the Lord, repented of our sins, and let His blood cleanse us, we were pure and clean in His sight.  As we live for Him, we need to come to Him every day, asking Him to search our hearts and to keep us pure. Proverbs 4:23 says,” Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

When we are facing decisions in our life, and need God’s wisdom, we can be sure that what He will show us to do will not lead us into anything that is not right and good.  His wisdom is pure. That is why it is very important that we seek the Lord before making any major or even minor decisions.  By doing this we will not find ourselves in situations that are not conducive to a pure and holy life.

Tomorrow’s devotion will explore Peaceable.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, in this world that is so full of evil, help us to seek you first in every situation for wisdom and direction, that we might keep our hearts pure before you.
