“When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” [John 5:6] You’ve heard of him; the man at the pool of Bethesda. No wonder Jesus asked him if he wanted to be healed. Thirty-eight years is a long time to be inflicted with an infirmity- yet be only steps away from healing waters. But no one ever stopped to help. They rushed by and stepped in before him every time. What a picture of our push and shove world. Every man for himself! But this should never be the attitude of those who know and serve the Lord. You and I have the living water of God’s Spirit inside of us. We pass by people every day whose lives are as broken and shipwrecked as this man’s. Like him they require someone to take the time to stop and ask the question, “Do you want to get well?”

Prayer:  Lord, give me ears to hear the silent cries of the hurting people around me. Help me be willing to stop and reach out to those others have passed by.
