“I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.” Psalm 101:2

Although I have read this verse many times before, it really stood out to me when I read it the other day.

We know that David was not perfect in man’s eyes. He made mistakes, but always was quick to repent and make things right. In this Psalm He is talking to the Lord and asking for help so that he will always behave himself wisely and keep his heart perfect before God.

When God gave Moses the law to deliver to the Israelites, he gave them specific instruction as to how they were to apply it in their homes:

Deuteronomy 6:7 “And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”

When Joshua became leader after Moses’ death, this is the message he brought to the people:

Joshua 24:15 “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

All of these men – David, Moses, and Joshua – realized that the way we lived and acted within our homes was important. We can put on a façade in public, but what we do and say within the confines of our home shows what is in our hearts. Our children watch and listen to everything we do. None of us are perfect in our own strength. We all make mistakes, and often say things we shouldn’t say. How we react to those situations reflects what is in our hearts. By the grace of God, we recognize our errors, apologize, and make things right.

For those of us who live alone, this scripture speaks to our hearts as well. Is Christ the centre of our life? Do we take time every day to read the Bible, and talk to the Lord in prayer? What about the music we listen to, and the things we read? Do we spend time praising the Lord or complaining about our situation?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, like the Psalmist I ask that you come to me and let me walk in my house with a perfect heart, every day.
