There is an old Hillsong chorus I’ve been singing all morning. A few lines of the song are:

In the quiet, in the stillness I know that You are God
In the secret of Your presence, there I am restored
In the chaos, in confusion, I know You’re sovereign still
In the moment of my weakness You give me grace to do Your will

Psalm 46:10 states, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Being still is difficult for me because I feel like I’m not accomplishing anything. However, when I’m being still in the presence of God and meditating upon His word, amazing things can take place. In pursuit of obeying Psalm 46:10 I am trying to learn ways to quiet my mind of expectations, to-do lists, deadlines, and whatever else is preoccupying my thoughts.

Here are a few things that help me focus during my time of devotion:

  1. Consistency:

Have a specific time everyday that you spend with the Lord. Your prayer life will flow into every facet of your day and will be beneficial to your overall spiritual wellbeing.

  2. Praise:

When quiet moments with the Lord are difficult to achieve, try worshiping God and thanking Him for everything He has accomplished in your life.

  3. Envision The Lord:

Close your eyes and imagine the Lord standing before you saying, “Come unto me all who are burdened and heavy hearted, I will give you rest.” Visualizing the Lord with you will bring so much peace during every season of your life.

  4. Journal:

When I can’t seem to find the words to speak out loud, I write my emotions, thoughts, prayer requests, and even my goals down in my journal. I address it to the Lord and talk to Him through all the pages, and end it by writing, “In Jesus name, amen.”

Becoming still in the presence of God puts all focus on Him allowing our laundry piles, everyday tasks, and overburdened schedules to fade into the background. Sounds amazing, doesn’t it? Take some time today to sit with the Lord, away from people, your phone, and to-do lists. Just focus on God’s sovereignty and love.
