Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12.

I can barely believe we are already into our third week of 2021. Time goes by so fast. Looking back to last year, I think if a lot of us are honest, we would say that we did not accomplish many things we set out to do.

We put so many of expectations on ourselves.

I am writing this to remind you that good things take time—a lot of time—more time than we thought it would take. And, that is okay.

One Bite At A Time

When I feel overwhelmed, my mom will ask me one question that alleviates unnecessary stress.

She asks, “How do you eat an elephant?” I sheepishly respond, “One bite at a time, mom.”

Maybe you have an elephant of a goal. Perhaps you are looking at the behemoth of a project in front of you and you feel like giving up. Maybe your workload is heavy, the pressure of taking care of your home is beyond exhausting, and raising your children is tiresome.

I feel the most drained when I look at the highlight reel of people’s lives on social media. The comparison game is such a trap and when I begin to venture toward a downward spiral, I have to distance myself from Instagram.

One of my constant prayers is, “Lord, teach me to take one day at a time.” God doesn’t give us talents or dreams that are in full bloom, but they are developped over time. So, today, stop criticizing yourself and celebrate the steps you have taken toward a specific goal.

Prayer: Lord, I do not want to live a life of negativity. I try to not criticize others, and repent when I do. But, I criticize myself all of the time, and never repent. Help me to understand that I am made in Your image and that You desire for me to see my worth. I pray that You would help me understand my worth under the loads of laundry, the deadlines at work, the stress of my marriage, and everything else in my life that You know about. Help me to be thankful for all the things You have helped me accomplish in my life, and all of the doors of opportunity You will open for me this year. And, help me to take one day at a time—one bite at a time.
