The other day I was reading an intriguing scripture and it caused me to ponder its meaning a bit further. Ecclesiastes 10:1 says, Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking scent.
I thought about how a fly in the ointment is a metaphor for unresolved issues in the life of a believer. A tiny, annoying fly can destroy precious and valuable ointment, just as a worried heart can create havoc on your health or secret sin can fester.
Imagine the apothecary represents our relationship with the Lord. The ointment is our life’s fragrance of worship and love. And the fly is the thing we wrestle with consistently.
The thing that is hindering you from moving forward with God may seem small, but it’s not insignificant.
Just as this valuable, aromatic ointment is spoiled by the smallest of insects, the unresolved issues in our hearts will lead to places we never intended to go.
Every one of us struggles with different things. Perhaps it’s insecurities, pride, worry, bitterness, envy, or secret sin. Try to take a few minutes today to meditate on the Lord and ask Him, what are the little things in my life that are stealing my joy, my peace, and a strong relationship with You?
Prayer: Lord, I pray that you would reveal the things in my life that seem trivial, but are causing a lot of pain and confusion. I don’t want things to get out of control, and I pray that you would help me seek Your face.
