“Some Doubted”

And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. (Matthew 28:17, KJV)

In Matthew 28:17, after describing the discovery of Jesus’ resurrection, the disciples went to meet Him. They saw him with their own eyes, and still, “…some doubted.”

Not just some random people. Some of the eleven. After the resurrection.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I don’t think any other fact humanizes the disciples for me like knowing they wavered. They were disoriented.

After seeing the miracles and signs.
After hearing the “I am…” statements.
After speaking with the resurrected Jesus.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I love how the next big thing after “some doubted” is not Jesus berating or shaming their floundering.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
He commissions them. He knew they would recover. He knew the Acts exploits were coming. He knew they were doing their best. He knew their fragility, their human grappling to understand. He knew it was overwhelming. He knew when the story clicked together in their thick skulls, they wouldn’t be able to shut up about it. He knew they’d tell His story, even if it meant facing their own deaths unnaturally soon. Jesus knew the church would prevail in His name.

I love how He showed them the mission before they were ready to fulfill it.
