“But the word of the Lord remains forever. And this word is the good news that was preached to you.” (I Peter 1:25, ESV)
As I was growing up, my parents made a sizeable investment, at least compared to their modest income, to buy my brother and me a set of World Book Encyclopedia. A print version of the encyclopedia may seem old-fashioned in this digital age, but at that time it was an impressive set of books to have on one’s bookshelf. I could pull out a volume, randomly open it, and learn so many fascinating facts. Science, history, geography, famous people, famous places—it was all there at my fingertips.
Long after I graduated from high school, the encyclopedias still held that place of honor in the living room. It was not until we cleared out the old home place that I realized how out of date—and in places totally inaccurate—the volumes now were. Science had continued to advance, geographic borders had changed, and history was still being made long after the ink stamped their pages. The set of books still looked just as impressive, but the information inside could no longer be relied upon.
I own another reference book, actually only one volume, which has maintained its accuracy all through the years. The binding is worn and the pages are wrinkled from constant use, but I do not have to worry about which parts are still true or which are now outdated. Its truth is unquestionable. It contains information on history, health, astronomy, science, relationships, integrity, government, leadership, childrearing, finance, and much, much more. Of course I’m referring to the unchangeable Word of God.
The Bible is a powerful book—a life-changing book. Filled with eternal promises, it offers hope to a world that has no hope. It sounds simplistic, but is nevertheless true, that the answer to every human dilemma can be found within its pages. That is why we must take the Word to the world. We owe it to them to give them a chance to
Psalm 19:7-11 sums up many of the blessings God’s Word brings into the lives of those who follow its precepts. All of the knowledge within my World Book Encyclopedia was never powerful enough to do any of this in my life. Its volumes held facts but not transforming truths.
The Word of God is perfect, sure, right, pure, clean, true, and righteous. This marvelous Book is more desirable than gold because it:
- converts the soul
- makes the simple wise
- rejoices the heart
- enlightens the eyes
- endures forever
- warns us
- offers great reward to those who keep it
Psalm 37:31 assures, “The law of his God is in his heart; and none of his steps shall slide.” We live in uncertain times, and the enemy of our soul would like nothing better than to sidetrack each of us. But the Word in our hearts will keep us alert and alive. It will make our steps sure and steady.
Lord, I appreciate Your eternal Word. It encourages me when I am discouraged, gives me direction when I face decisions, and teaches me how to live a holy life. Thank You for the privilege of owning this precious book.
