“Give your troubles to God; He will be up all night anyway.”

“He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber” (Psalm 121:3 in the New American Standard Bible)

We pray because prayer opens up the floodgates of God’s infinite grace and power to flow toward the person in need. God can act without prayer, but He chooses to operate within the boundaries of human will and invitation. He allows us to participate in His work on earth with each prayer.

Leonard Ravenhill once said about prayer, “One might estimate the weight of the world, tell the size of the celestial city, count the stars of heaven, measure the speed of lightning, and tell the time of the rising and the setting of the sun – but you cannot estimate prayer power. Prayer is as vast as God because He is behind it. Prayer is a mighty as God because He has committed Himself to answer it.”

Prayer: Lord Jesus, when I face a tough situation, my first response should be to ask for Your help. Thank You for reminding me that You long to be my helper and to be fully involved in my life.

Not being prepared to stay overnight I did not have my own Bible with me, so I picked up the Gideon Bible that was in the drawer of my son’s room at Carolina Hospital. Engraved on the front cover was “Thinking of you – The Gideons.” God gave His Word with us in mind. He inspired holy men of old to write. How do I know it’s inspired? As one great Bible teacher said, “Because it inspires me!”

2 Timothy 3:16 reads,

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for instruction in righteousness” (King James Version of the Holy Bible).

Prayer: Today I want to thank You especially, Lord, for Your Word. When I struggle with decisions I must make, I can read Your Word and find the answer. Time spent in Your Word is profitable and uplifting.

“Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.” (Ephesians 3:20 in the King James Version of the Holy Bible).

Reading this scripture made me realize that if my wildest dreams come true that both God and I will be involved in it. I must let Him work through me. He’s God and He can do anything He chooses to do. He wants to do greater things in my life if I allow Him to do so. This year I plan to team up with God and let Him work through me so that great things can happen in my life. It’s me and God!

Prayer: Here I am Lord, I give all myself to You. Mold and make me as You see fit in this new year. I want to be a vessel of honor. All praise belongs to You!

I have a friend in Louisiana who has cancer that has spread throughout her body. Her prognosis is that she will be gone from this life in a few short weeks. Delisa just turned 50 and it seems to me it’s too young to be leaving us. She is a vibrant leader who serves with her husband in leadership. She wrote a note to her friends stating that leaving this world and going to be with Jesus was what her life was all about.

I think she read Revelation 2:10,

“Fear none of those things which thou shall suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.”

Yes, there is a crown of life waiting for those who are faithful! What an assurance for those who serve the Lord.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I want to inherit that crown of life. Give me strength to be faithful unto death for there is a crown of life just for me.

“We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers” (1 Thessalonians 1:2 in the King James Version of the Holy Bible).

Praying for friends and their needs will enhance your prayer time. The writer of our devotional verse begins his prayer with thanksgiving first of all to God. And then He mentioned those he prayed for by name. When we limit our prayer time to just ourselves, we miss so much by not bringing our friends and their needs to God who hears and answers those requests. He is touched by the feelings of our infirmity. The things that bother us He desires to heal; whether it’s for you or those you love. I can testify that others have prayed for me and God intervened even before the need was made known to them.

Prayer: Prayer is wonderful! Just to know someone is praying for me on a daily basis is more valuable than money. Thank You, Lord, for those who consistently pray for me by name.

Have you noticed the reaction from a young child who has tasted table food and the mother is trying to make them eat a jar of baby food? I remember trying to do this to our daughter Shana. She would shake her head “No” vehemently indicating she didn’t want the baby food and often she would point to the food on the table. She was telling us that she was growing up and wanted to eat what the big people were eating.

How can we be content to stay a spiritual baby? The Word of God says to grow up!

“For every one that useth milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe” (Hebrews 5:13 in the King James Version of the Holy Bible).

Prayer: Thank You, Lord Jesus, for providing the sincere meat of the Word. Your Word is what satisfies the hunger in my soul.

We often limit our hospitality to those closest to us. While we think of young people as moving in cliques, adults also frequently stay within the same small social group. We don’t take the time to expand our social contacts beyond those comfortable few. The Bible, however, speaks of three…

God has scars too. Sometimes I forget that and try to hide mine. I often feel that I’m the only one who has known rejection, shame, and pain.

That isn’t true though. Jesus was beaten and died on a cross because He loved us. He was misunderstood, hated, and gossiped about. He was all too familiar with pain and suffering.

The Bible tells us that He was tempted by the same things that we are today. He understands when we struggle, feeling discouraged and wounded (Hebrews 4:15). Because He has been-there-done-that, we don’t have to worry about bringing our problems and concerns to Him. We know he cares and understands.

Prayer: Lord, You knew that it was like to be hungry, tired, and pressured. You walked on earth, died for our sins, and rose again so that we might have a new life. Thank you for the gift of Your love.

Baking a cake requires a recipe. Gathering the utensils and ingredients, carefully measuring and mixing, and then baking it for the correct length of time are all critical for its success. Too many eggs, omitting the sugar, or not measuring the flour correctly can cause it to flop.

A peaceful, pleasant life requires following a “recipe” too. Randomly picking and choosing which ingredients to add or omit on our own can be disastrous.

The Word of God has the recipe for a balanced, flourishing, “delicious” life. Allowing God to add and measure what goes into our lives brings peace, joy, and love. He leaves nothing to chance, but carefully mixes all things together for our good (Romans 8:28).

Prayer: Dear Lord, We trust You with our lives. May we always be pliable as you work in us. Every day give us the exact ingredients that we need.
