“My God sent his angel to shut the lions’ mouths so that they would not hurt me, for I have been found innocent in his sight. And I have not wronged you, Your Majesty.”
Daniel 6:22 NLT
Daniel did not bend to man-made laws and thus began his journey to the lion’s den.
While reading through Daniel chapter 6 in preparation for this portion of our study, I asked myself “Why did King Darius have a den of lions in the first place?” It seems like a strange commodity, but this was to be the place where Daniel would surely lose his life.
I’ve seen lions at our local zoo, and to be completely honest, I’ve only ever seen them slumbering in the sun. They appear docile, unthreatening, and lacking motivation to procure their next meal. Still, I would not want to be thrown into their living room, as nature would more than likely have her way.
Were the lions curious about this young man who was thrown at their mercy? Did they give him a few sniffs, and lose interest? Did they even stir at all? We will never know exactly what took place in that pit, but we do know that Daniel miraculously survived the night, surrounded by animals that could end his life in mere seconds.
Afterward, we read that Daniel’s accuser’s, and their wives and children were all thrown into the pit and were savagely attacked and lost their lives before they even hit the floor.
Just as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were rescued from the fiery furnace, Daniel was delivered from what was sure to be a torturous death.
Our God holds all power in His hands, and still has the power today to deliver you from your own lions den. We are a protected people, and are hidden safely under the shadow of His wings.
