“As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him—you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 2:4–5.
Unity is a remarkable model of God’s purpose in His kingdom. These scriptures explain that we are chosen, living stones. However, we are not to operate alone, but to be built into a spiritual house with other believers. We cannot make it alone.
The Power Of Six Legos
Mark Batterson, in his book A Million Little Miracles, tells a story about attending an entrepreneur conference in Las Vegas. One of the exhibits he visited featured a brand architect from Lego. He writes, “During his presentation, this brand architect handed us six Lego bricks. Then he asked us to estimate the number of unique combinations that could be created with those six bricks, which sounded like a trick question, so I aimed high and guessed several hundred combinations. That left me several hundred million short of the actual answer! It was a mathematician, Soren Eilers, who wrote a computer program that modeled all the potential combinations. Are you ready for this? The total number of possible permutations—six bricks with eight studs each is 915,103,765. Nearly a billion possible permutations with six Lego bricks! That is pretty unbelievable.”
1 Corinthians 12:27 states, “Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.”
One lego—one stone—or, one member by itself is nothing. However, if you take stones (or 6 legos) and build them into a wall, that stone now has a purpose because there is unity! It is God’s will for us to be linked together. You may feel like you can’t accomplish a lot, but what would happen if you gave your one stone, or one Lego brick to God? He can multiply that talent, that dream, or that gifting. He can do immeasurably more than we ever could. If a mathematician can create software to prove 6 Lego bricks can make nearly a billion combinations, then what is God capable of doing with what little we have to offer? You are a living stone today. You are not meant to carry it all on your own. You are not meant to accomplish it all by yourself. You are meant to join with other living stones to build something wonderful for God’s kingdom.
PRAYER:
Lord, I tend to do things by myself, but you have called me to be a living stone with other believers who will build a spiritual house. Teach me what the true meaning of unity means and show me what togetherness looks like. I want to grow, not only as an individual but as a body of believers.
Journal Prompts:
- The Power of Unity. Thinking of the Lego bricks—each simple, but together capable of almost a billion combinations. What relationships or connections in your life has God used to multiply your impact? Who are the other “living stones” God has placed around you?
- Letting Go of Independence. In what areas of your life are you trying to “build alone”? What fears or beliefs make it difficult for you to trust others or partner in Kingdom work?
- God’s Mathematics. With six Lego bricks, there are 915 million combinations. What dream, gift, or talent do you feel is “too small”? What might God be able to do with it if you surrendered it to Him and let it connect with others?
