“I don’t have nobody to blame but myself.” “Double negatives” are so confusing! There are also points in Scripture that are sometimes hard to grasp—that seem almost too good to be true. For example, some people think that the mercy of the Lord is applied only at the point of…
“I can’t do nothing right.” Yes, that is a double negative. We’re looking at how double negatives are considered “incorrect” and cause confusion in standard English usage—and also in our lives. I’ve heard someone say, “Because I sinned after I got saved—after the Lord filled me with the Holy Ghost—I…
Job 23:10, “But he knoweth the way that I take: When he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.” Think with me for a minute—What would the world (Christianity, the Church, the Bible, your life) be like without the story of Job? The book of Job has made…
“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.” I Timothy 6:6-8 I like the way Max Lucado describes the word content in his book, In…
“Never” was a favorite word used by my children. They often used it to put a guilt trip on me. “Mom, you never take us…” The word “never” means not ever; at no time. Not at all; absolutely not; to no extent or degree. Obviously, my kids didn’t know what…
The Bible tells many stories of Jesus and His disciples. One day Jesus instructed, “Let us pass over to the other side” (Mark 4:35). A great storm developed before they reached the far shore. Jesus, tired from His teaching, slept in the back of the ship. Frantic, the disciples woke Him. “Don’t you even care that we’re about to die?”
Jesus arose and said, “Peace, be still” (Mark 4:39). They had forgotten that it was Jesus’ idea to make the journey. The fact that it was His idea implied they would have a safe crossing. Storms blow into our lives too. Amid the turmoil and confusion we forget that the Word of God told us, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5).
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to remember You control our storms. Today we ask You to speak peace to our hearts and minds.
