“Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares” (Hebrews 13:2). We really enjoyed chiding a friend as he grumbled about once again being asked for assistance by someone with a hard luck story that didn’t quite hold together. “Don’t you know that was probably an…
Focus Verse: “Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands” (Proverbs 14:1 KJV). Busy hands and a caring heart are a description of how most women live their daily lives. Some hands are busy caring for children. Other hands are busy caring for…
“She extends a helping hand to the poor and opens her arms to the needy.” Proverbs 31:20 NLT Most of us are familiar with the story of Dorcas as recorded in the Book of Acts. We do not know anything about her early life, or how old she was. What…
“And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.” II Peter 1:7 Love has no meaning unless it is demonstrated by giving and having the ability to give. James Chapter 1, verse 27, says: “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless…
We often limit our hospitality to those closest to us. While we think of young people as moving in cliques, adults also frequently stay within the same small social group. We don’t take the time to expand our social contacts beyond those comfortable few. The Bible, however, speaks of three…
“There went with us also certain of the disciples of Caesarea, and brought with them one Mnason of Cyprus, an old disciple, with whom we should lodge.” Acts 21:16 (King James Version of the Holy Bible).
I love the senior saints who still enjoy fellowship and excercise the gift of hospitality. According to Barnes’ Notes the rites of hospitality were shown in a distinguished manner by the early Christians. Adam Clarke’s Commentary states that his being an old disciple may either refer to his having been a very early convert, probably one of those on the Day of Pentecost, or to his being now an old man. Either way Mnason was a mature Christian and it is evident that what he received from God was still active in his life. The gift of hospitality is still important for Christians to share today.
Prayer: Lord, I pray that age will never squelch my love for fellowship with others of like precious faith. There is nothing like the family of God!
