“Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.” Hebrews 11:11
Sarah had to make many choices during her lifetime. One of the biggest ones was to believe that God’s promise to make Abraham a father of many nations was a promise that one day she would bear a son.
Her life was not easy. Can you imagine how Sarah must have felt when Abraham announced that they were going on a journey, but he did not know what the destination would be? She must pack up everything and say goodbye to her friends and family. How would you and I react to that? But she made the right choice and did what her husband asked of her.
Genesis 12 records an instance when Abraham made a wrong choice, which put Sarah in an uncomfortable position. There was a famine in the land and rather than trusting God to provide for them, Abraham decided to go into Egypt. For his safety, he asked Sarah to say that she was his sister. She chose to obey him, even though it caused problems.
But probably the choice we remember most in Sarah’s story is that she reached a point where it seemed impossible to her that she would ever have a child, and so she offered her maid to Abraham. This was not God’s plan, and the consequences of that decision still affect the world today.
In Genesis 18, an angel visited Abraham and Sarah and renewed the promise that she would have a son. Verse 14 “Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.”
As Hebrews 11:11 tells us, Sarah’s faith was renewed and God gave her strength to bear Isaac, even though she was well past the child-bearing age.
Take some time this week to read Sarah’s story and let your faith increase as you consider the Lord’s faithfulness to fulfill His word.
Has God given you a promise? Is there something that you have been praying about for a long time? Do not give up. Choose to trust the Lord and wait patiently for Him to fulfill your desire. “Is any thing too hard for the LORD?
Prayer: Jesus, you are faithful, your promises never fail. We choose to believe that whatever you have promised, you can fulfill.
