“Let this be recorded for a generation to come, so that a people yet to be created may praise the Lord:”
Psalms 102:18 ESV
The beginning lines of this Psalm appear to be the remnants of a great tragedy that left the writer shattered and wounded. We read of distress, a broken heart, loneliness, and withering away. The scene set is one of hopelessness, desperation, and intense sorrow.
After 11 verses of anguish, the writer begins to speak of the nature and character of God. He expressed his vulnerability, acknowledged his sorrow, and found himself standing once again on his firm foundation.
The writer appears to have an understanding far beyond the generation in which he lives. He could have left out the messy parts, the vulnerable moments, and the silent suffering. He, however, chose to include it for future generations, so that “a people yet to be created may praise the Lord”.
What a blessing to know that God does not turn away from our painful, muddied experiences in life. He does not turn a blind eye to the suffering of His children, choosing only to engage in the victorious, celebratory seasons of our existence. God remains constant through every high and every low.
We see this in the life of the writer of Psalms 102, and also in the life of Job, Elijah, Peter, and many more. Through every mistake, doubt, question, and mess that we create, God will remain faithful, steadfast, and unwavering.
God is so very near to you today, and stands strong beside you in your time of need.
