Someone You Can Trust

Where can we go and be safe? I’ve wondered that at times. People fail us. Circumstances come avalanching through our lives, leaving us wounded, beaten and broken. It seems that there is no one that we can count on all the time and in every situation. There is a “Friend” that will never leave us. There is One that can be trusted with our darkest secrets and greatest needs. It is exhausting to constantly defend and protect ourselves and what we have. “Trust in the Lord,” the Psalmist said (Psalm 37:4). When we trust God, we no longer have to struggle and strain to get what we need.

Prayer: Dear Lord, we do trust You. Give us courage to trust You even more. Being vulnerable even before You is not easy. You know that. Thank You for loving us. Thank You for providing for our every need.

The American Dream

The American dream! Who doesn’t long for financial security, money in the bank and investments for later? The dogged efforts that are required to attain financial freedom keep many people from going after the “brass ring.” Instead, millions are spent on lottery tickets. Perhaps “luck” will replace diligence and hard work. Money is not the only thing we would really like a lot of. Good relationships with family, friends, and God are not things that we just stumble into. Daily deposits are needed to maintain a healthy “balance” in each of these accounts. Each day we are either making withdrawals or deposits.

Prayer: Dear Lord, we need Your help as we walk through life. We long for the “good life” but are unable to make it happen. You’ve promised in Your Word that when we acknowledge You, that You will show us the way (Proverbs 3:6). We’re doing that right now.

“From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the Lord’s name is to be praised” (Psalms 113:3 in the King James Version of the Holy Bible). Continual praise is a must for the children of God. There are no ifs, ands, or buts in this scripture! If you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, or the weather is lousy, there is never an excuse not to praise the name of the Lord. Praise is the order of the day according to this verse. If the Lord gave you another day to live, then it’s time to praise Him!

Prayer: Today I will praise You, Lord, for giving me a brand new day. Your goodness and mercy causes me to say, Lord, You’re worthy of my highest praise!

Jesus Loves Me

“He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love” (1 John 4:8 in the King James Version of the Holy Bible). A 92-year-old retired preacher was being honored by his congregation. They asked him to tell the congregation the greatest lesson he ever learned in his 50+ years of ministry. His response was, “The greatest lesson I ever learned in all my preaching years was that Jesus loves me.” He proceeded to sing the familiar children’s song, “Jesus Loves Me.” He sang the senior version of the song. The first verse went like this: Though my steps are oh, so slow, With my hand in His I’ll go. On through life, let come what may, He’ll be there to lead the way. What a great lesson for all of us to learn!

Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for continuing to love me even as I am aging. Your love for me is a constant regardless of my inabilities. I am confident of Your love. I am blessed everyday that I live just to know that You love me unconditionally.

Your Decisions Do Affect Your Family

The Book of Esther describes an environment that was increasingly hostile toward the Jews. Mordecai and Esther were minority Jews living in the Persian Empire. At that time the population was comprised of 250-350 million Arabs and 18 million Jews. The clock was ticking rapidly toward their annihilation. If the Jewish inhabitants were to be spared, Mordecai knew a decision had to be made right away. It was obvious to Mordecai that Esther had to be reminded of her heritage. Esther had made Mordecai proud but now her loyalty to the people of God would be tested. After prayer and fasting she approached the king with her request and miraculously her people were spared. This decision affected not only her but also her family for generations to come. Esther 9:31 records the long-term impact of this decision, “To confirm these days of Purim in their times appointed, according to Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had enjoined them, and as they had decreed for themselves and for their seed, the matters of the fastings and their cry” (King James Version of the Holy Bible).

Prayer: Lord, help me to make the right decisions today. My family is at stake. The climate in my world is hostile and the enemy is seeking to destroy me and the generation that follows me. Keep me true, Lord Jesus, keep me true!

“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5 in the King James Version of the Holy Bible). Be honest about your thought pattern. What do you think about most of the time? We must understand that we are in charge of our thoughts. Every man is his own gardener and must remove the weeds from his garden. When thoughts enter our mind, we need to sort them and not allow the bad ones to linger. We have to take the proverbial bull by the horns and not give the enemy a place to dwell. Take charge of your thoughts because you are in charge of what stays and what goes.

Prayer: Lord, cleanse my mind from anything that’s unlike You. You are the One who made me and I want to keep my mind focused on You.

Stops

Corrie Ten Boom made a statement that I just read. She said, “When we are obedient, God guides our steps and our stops.” Stops are so annoying especially when you’re in a hurry. Hurry is the world I live in. Realizing God is in our stops is probably harder than remember He is in our steps. Steps represent moving forward or progress, while stops seem useless. People go to great lengths to avoid stops. Some will try to cross a railroad track with red lights and the alarm ringing. Often they don’t live to tell about it. I would have to agree with Corrie that God is in both our steps and our stops. “Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.” (Psalms 119:133 in the King James Version of the Holy Bible).

Prayer: Lord, help me to be obedient and follow Your direction in my steps and stops. Lord, You take the lead and I will follow. You see way down the road and know the end from the beginning. Trusting You leads to a successful journey.

Keep a Song in Your Heart

“The Lord is my strength and song, and is become my salvation.” (Psalms 118:14 in the King James Version of the Holy Bible). Do you know of anybody who sings or hums a whole lot? I just read a quote on a bulletin board that grabbed my attention this morning. John Anglund wrote, “Birds don’t sing because they have an answer – they sing because they have a song.” One of my dear friends suffered with severe panic attacks. It was a horrible experience for her. She found if she would begin singing and quoting scriptures when she felt an attack coming on, the attack would subside quickly. God helped her get through with a song. Now she hums songs almost all day. God puts a song in your heart to be used during stressful times. Keep a song in your heart! You don’t have to have an answer; just a song will do to help you get through.

Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for the song in my heart. When I feel overwhelmed I can reach for it and be encouraged. You are my song!
