By example, Jesus showed us that when His energy waned, He took time to recharge. The Bible says in Mark 1:35, “And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed” (King James Version of the Holy Bible). We lead such busy lives making it that much more important that we realize we are not immune to the pressures of life. We too must recharge our spiritual batteries in His presence. Determine today to get away from the noise of all that is calling for your attention to allow God to restore your soul.

Prayer: Lord, I too need a quiet time with You away from the distractions of the day and the thousands of thoughts that bombard my mind. Thank You, for renewing, restoring and refreshing my spirit as I sit here in Your presence. I lean on You, Lord! Amen.

“My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor faint when you are reproved by Him.” (Hebrews 12:5 in the King James Version of the Holy Bible)

There is an area of parenting that I do not enjoy and that is disciplining my children. My ten-year-old can be especially difficult to punish because he is old enough now to justify, rationalize, and even minimize whatever he is guilty of. As a parent, I want to give him the benefit of the doubt, but through trial and error I’ve learned that there is such a thing as too much mercy. If I refuse to discipline, I have noticed that my son’s attitude borders on disrespectful, disobedient and stubborn. And have you noticed that punishment generally has consequences for the parent too? If I tell my son he can’t play with his friends for the rest of the day, I end up contending with a disgruntled, bored little boy who won’t give me a moment’s peace! Punishment effects whomever is involved.

The Bible teaches that disciplining our children shows them that we love them. And God takes our discipline very seriously too. He does not want us to regard it lightly. Refusing to surrender to God’s discipline will delay His blessing in our life. Just as a parent does not enjoy disciplining their children, it is God’s desire to bless us, not to hurt us. We need discipline to handle the blessings. Our character needs to be developed so we can receive more from the Lord without it destroying our integrity. Without discipline we would become spoiled and useless to the Kingdom of God.

Prayer: Lord, I am feeling the growing pains of reaching a new level of commitment in my Christian journey. I understand that this is a season of testing in my life. Please help me respond correctly to discipline and open my heart to the lessons You are teaching me. Amen.

“Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” (II Corinthians 3:17 in the King James Version of the Holy Bible).

Do I truly value my freedom? Do I really understand what it means to be free? True freedom doesn’t mean the absence of adversity nor does it mean that I am exempt from all authority. Pure freedom is the freedom of the soul that only God can give and no man can take it away.

Prayer: Lord, You came to free us from our past mistakes and to liberate us from a life of servitude to sin so we could follow truth. Because of You, I live in freedom regardless of the prison of circumstances that may surround me.

“It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23 in the King James Version of the Bible)

God’s compassion has no end. His desire is not to destroy you, but to restore you. We made mistakes yesterday; last week; last month; last year; but today He is inviting us to start over. He offers us new mercy every morning!

Prayer: I am overwhelmed by your loving faithfulness to me. You see me not as I am, but what You want me to become. Thank you for being patient with me!
