Built to Stand

Storms have a way of revealing what we cannot see.

When heavy rain falls and floodwaters rise, the beauty of a house matters little if its foundation cannot withstand the pressure. A home may look strong from the outside, but when the ground beneath it gives way, everything built upon it is at risk.

Jesus used a similar picture to teach His followers about the importance of a spiritual foundation.

“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts on them, will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”
—Matthew 7:24, NASB

Jesus described two builders. Both built houses. Both experienced the same storm. The difference was not the storm—it was the foundation.

That truth still speaks to us today.

We cannot always control the storms that come into our lives. Family difficulties, financial uncertainty, health concerns, disappointment, grief, unanswered prayers, and unexpected changes can shake us. Following Jesus does not mean we will never experience difficulty.

It means we can have a foundation that holds when difficulty comes.

Built in the Secret Place

A life that stands strong in public is often built quietly in private.

Jesus taught His disciples to pray in secret (Matthew 6:6). The secret place is where our relationship with God becomes personal. It is where we bring our fears, questions, burdens, and desires to Him.

Daniel understood the importance of this private relationship with God. Even when prayer became dangerous, he continued his regular practice of praying three times each day (Daniel 6:10).

Prayer did not keep Daniel out of the lion’s den. But prayer helped him remain faithful when he entered it.

Sometimes standing in faith means kneeling before God.

Sometimes it means praying through tears.

Sometimes it means continuing to trust when the answer has not yet come.

The strength developed in those quiet moments with God may not be visible to anyone else, but it becomes evident when the storm arrives.

Built on the Word

Jesus said the wise person not only hears His words but acts on them.

James echoed this truth: “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only” (James 1:22, KJV).

God’s Word is not meant merely to inform us. It is meant to transform us.

When we forgive because Scripture tells us to forgive, we are building.

When we choose holiness, we are building.

When we remain faithful during difficulty, we are building.

When we continue praying while we wait, we are building.

Every act of obedience adds strength to the spiritual structure of our lives.

We may not notice the difference in a single day, but over time, obedience creates a foundation capable of carrying us through difficult seasons.

When the Storm Comes

Jesus never promised the wise builder would avoid the storm.

He promised the house would stand.

That distinction matters.

Sometimes we pray for God to remove the storm, and He does. Other times, He gives us grace to stand in the middle of it.

Peter discovered this when he stepped out of the boat and walked toward Jesus on the water. As long as his attention remained on Jesus, he walked on the water. When he focused on the wind, fear took over.

The storm around Peter did not change immediately. But Jesus was still there.

The same is true for us.

The circumstances may change, but Jesus does not.

The answer may be delayed, but God remains faithful.

The storm may be loud, but Jesus is greater.

Hebrews 13:8 reminds us, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever” (KJV).

That is why we can stand.

Built to Bless Others

God does not strengthen us only for our own survival. What He builds in us can bless someone else.

Our faith can encourage someone who is struggling. Our testimony can give hope to someone who feels alone. Our prayers can carry someone through a difficult season. Our obedience can become an example for those watching our lives.

The storms we survive with Christ can become part of the testimony we share with others.

So build.

Build in the secret place.

Build through prayer.

Build through God’s Word.

Build through obedience.

Build through faith.

Build through perseverance.

And when the storm comes, remain on the Rock.

Jesus is not simply someone who helps us through the storm.

He is the foundation that enables us to stand.

Prayer

Jesus, help me build my life on You. Teach me to seek You in the secret place, to trust Your Word, and to obey You even when obedience is difficult. When storms come, keep my eyes fixed on You. Strengthen my faith and help me stand firm when the circumstances around me are shaking. Use what You build in me to encourage and reach others. Thank You for being my Rock, my strength, and my sure foundation. In Jesus’ name, amen.
