Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. (Psalm 119:11, Holy Bible, King James Version).

I’m a perpetual student—always learning something that will enhance my life. It could be a class on computer technology, attending a writing workshop, or a simple as pulling a flashcard from a box of Spanish/English words. Too soon the things I’ve learned fade and I have to go back to the source for constant review.

Before there were multiple versions of the Bible, I memorized simple verses from the King James Version in Sunday School. My childhood favorites were “Jesus wept” (John 11:35) and “Rejoice evermore,” (I Thessalonians 5:16) because of the brevity. Then came the reality Scriptures. “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD (Deuteronomy 6:4) followed by the words of salvation, “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost (Acts 2:38).

Unlike other topics I’ve studied, the Scriptures have stayed with me. Their light still shines on my path because I have hidden them in my heart.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I trust in Your word to continue to bring me light in a dark world. Amen.

Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105, Holy Bible, New Life Version)

Imagine holding a lamp in the darkness, or perhaps walking beside someone carrying a lantern. When the lantern is held high, it sends a glow downward in a circle. If the person moves the light to the opposite side from where you are walking, you will only receive segments of light filtered by that person’s movements.

Reading the Bible is similar. When you read study for guidance, God’s light shines from above and you’re bathed in the glow. If you read it to fulfill a duty of daily Scripture reading, you’ll still receive some light, but the circle will not shine beyond your feet. Apostle Paul must have been aware of this when he wrote to Timothy.

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15, New King James)

Are you walking in someone else’s shadow, or is God’s light shining on your pathway?

Prayer: Lord, let the light of Your Word shine on me. Amen.

So Moses lifted his hand to the sky, and a deep darkness covered the entire land of Egypt for three days. During all that time the people could not see each other, and no one moved. But there was light as usual where the people of Israel lived. (Exodus 10:22-23, Holy Bible, New Living Translation)

This event happened in Egypt during a time of enslavement of the Jewish community. God had chosen Moses to lead these weary Israelites back home, but the Pharaoh was reluctant to release them. So God showed His universal power.

Imagine the Egyptians engulfed in total darkness, unable to move about, but seeing the light where the Israelites lived. That’s how God blesses His children. When everything looks bleak, He surrounds us with His light. No matter how dismal life is, God casts a glow on His children.

Prayer: Thank You Lord for shining Your light around me. Amen.

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1, Holy Bible, King James Version)

Have you ever fumbled for a flashlight during an electrical power failure? Until that battery operated light illuminates a pathway, you’re in darkness. Sometimes life is a blackout with no ray of hope, no visible escape. Look toward the Lord. He is your light and your salvation.

Prayer: Lord, when I stumble in darkness and fear clutches me in its grips, lead me to safety by Your light. Amen.

“He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.” Psalm 107:29

I recently heard a beautiful gospel song entitled “The God of the Storm.” I can’t remember all the words but some of them were, “troubled waters of danger set a stage for His feet, I’m peaceful in the midst of danger and harm, beneath the safe cover of the God of the storms.”
I was reading the story in Mark about Jesus telling His disciples that they were going to the other side of the lake. When the storm arose, He was asleep in the back of the ship, but the disciples were afraid and woke Him, asking Him if He did not care. He asked them why they did not have faith, and He stilled the storm. They should have realized that with Him in the boat they had nothing to fear.
Another line from that song says, “when the winds of confusion have gone on all night long, take shelter and rest with the God of the storm.
I am so thankful I know the God of the storm, and that He is always there.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, that you are the God of the storm, you are always in control, and when we call out to you, you bring peace.

“For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land;” Song of Solomon 2:11-12
After two weeks of being housebound because of bad weather, and a bout with the Flu, it was great to get out for a walk. The sun was warm, snow was melting, and there was a feel of spring in the air.
When I returned from my walk, I was greeted by a whole flock of robins on the front lawn. The writer of the above scripture, spoke of the time of singing of birds, signifying winter was over. Here in this part of the country, the robins are our messengers from the Lord letting us know that winter is nearing its end and spring is on its way.

Prayer: Thank you Lord, for sending the robins, letting us know that the seasons will change just as they always do.

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.” Psalms 37:23-24 KJV
Delighting in the law of the Lord, and walking in His way is no guarantee that everything in life will always be perfect. God allows the sun to shine on the just and the unjust, and He only promised that all things would work together for our good, not that everything would be good.
There will be times when we may stumble and fall, but the scripture tells us that we will not be utterly cast down. The Lord upholds us with His hand. Sometimes He allows us to be tested and tried, but one thing for sure, He never leaves us, He is always there to pick us up.
Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for that assurance that you are always there, ready to pick us up and set us on our way rejoicing.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 KJV
In reading the Bible through each year, I find the Book of Leviticus one of the hardest to read. Here God sets forth all the different sacrifices that are to be offered. It must have been hard to keep track of what was to be brought for each specific purpose.
It surely makes me thankful that Jesus paid the supreme sacrifice on Calvary for all the sins of the world. All we have to do is accept what He has done for us, and His blood cleanses us from all sins, and forgives us completely, not just for another year, but for eternity. The perfect Lamb of God shed His blood once and for all.
Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for your sacrifice on Calvary, that paid the sin debt, and I am forgiven.
