“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27
For many years loud noises bothered me, and I thought my hearing was excellent. As the music in church became louder and harder to listen to, I made a choice. Rather than staying home or getting frustrated, I used earplugs. By blocking some of the volume, I could enjoy the service so much better.
But as we get older, our hearing deteriorates. It does not happen overnight. We are not aware of it, until we find ourselves asking people to repeat what they have said. After a hearing test and a visit with a Specialist, I am now wearing hearing aids. Adjusting has taken time and persistence. But it has been worth it. Life is easier.
Our spiritual hearing is more important than our physical hearing. When Jesus was teaching, He often used the expression, “If any man has ears to hear let him hear.” Consider some things that can cause our spiritual healing to be deficient and the remedy we can find in Scripture:
- Lack of stillness. Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God.” Our quiet times with the Lord should be a priority in our lives.
- Luke 11:4 “And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us.”
- Hebrews 12:15 “Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.”
- James 4:6 “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.”
- Romans 12:1 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”
Romans 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” God speaks to us through His Word. As we read it, or as we hear it preached, the Holy Spirit will illuminate it to us.
Luke 11:28 “Blessed are they that hear the word of God and keep it.”
