There failed not ought of any good thing which the LORD had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass. Joshua 21:45

I just finished reading the book of Joshua in my daily Bible reading. No matter how many times we read these stories over and over, it is still amazing how the Lord led the children of Israel out of Egypt and brought them into the land He had promised. Many times they murmured and complained and rose up against their leaders. How much easier their journey would have been if they had only trusted God and believed His promises to lead them safely.

When they have reached their destination, God has given them great victories over the nations. God had kept every one of the promises He had made to them. As we read on in their story, we see that they turned their back on the One who had been so faithful to them, and they let God’s gifts slip from their hands.

What can we learn from this? Let’s look at some promises that are ours to claim:

  1. II Peter 1:3-4 “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”
  2. Acts 2:38-39 “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.”
  3. I John 2:25 “And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.”
  4. James 1:12 “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.”
  5. James 2:5 “Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?”

These are just a few of the things that the Lord has promised to those who will follow Him. We are so blessed but how often do we take these promises for granted? Daily submitting to the leadership of the Holy Spirit, spending time in His Word, and praying will keep those promises alive in our hearts.

Hebrews 2:1 “Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.”

Prayer: Lord you have given us so many great and precious promises. Help us to value them and keep them ever before us as we live for you.
