Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

I have a letterboard in my kitchen and I change the quote on it every so often. They are usually humorous, but a few weeks ago (with everything going on in the world) I decided to do something a little more serious. The quote says this: “The world is changed by your example, not by your opinion” – Paulo Coelho.

It is so easy to trust in what I believe and feel as a person, but the above scripture reminds me that it is unwise to do so. I have opinions like everyone else, but they don’t change the world or the atmosphere around me, only God and His word can do that. Too often people hide behind computer and phone screens, harshly giving their opinion for the sole purpose of giving their opinion. How often though have we seen someone change their mind or perspective on something because of this? I’ve yet to see it.

God’s word is clear and unyielding when it states that we should not lean on what we understand. According to Blue Letter Bible, to lean can also mean to support one’s self or to trust in. We cannot establish our foundation for the way we conduct ourselves to be based on the very little we comprehend. As humans we cannot see beyond the very moment we are in, but God knows the beginning from the end and vice versa. He does all things well, and has a beautiful, intricate plan for our lives.

If we acknowledge (recognize, accept, profess) God in everything we do and trust in His infinite wisdom, He will make the path set before us straight. It doesn’t say that the journey will be smooth and easy to travel, but the direction we are to take will be unmistakably clear.

Today, let’s trust in His word and not in our own opinions or understanding. Let’s go against the grain of culture and root ourselves firmly in absolute truth, so that we can move forward on the correct path we are to take.

Prayer: Lord, please help me to become more grounded in You and Your word. I know that my emotions can get the best of me sometimes, but I also that You are a God of mercy and grace. Lead me today and I will follow.
