“For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.” Jeremiah 2:13

Daily Bible reading this month has been in the Book of Jeremiah. This book is filled with prophecies of doom and destruction, because of Judah’s rebellion against God. But as we read it there are nuggets of truth that we can apply to our lives today.

The nation of Israel had already been taken into captivity because of their rebellion and disobedience, and now Judah was facing the same situation. Jeremiah was a young man when the Lord gave him a great responsibility, which he did not want to accept.

Jeremiah 1:16-17 “Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child. But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.”

He has been called the Weeping Prophet because his heart was tender. His message was one of warning and hope. God showed him that Judah had not only forsaken the God of their fathers, but they had substituted worship of the gods of the heathen nations. Jeremiah preached a message of repentance. If they would turn away from their wicked ways and return to their worship of Jehovah, they would be forgiven, and God would reverse His decision to destroy them.

Just as there were many false prophets and teachers in Jeremiah’s day, the same problem exists in our world today. Nations that were founded upon the Word of God have drifted far away from those ideals and our world has become corrupt. The Bible teaches us that judgment is coming upon the world. But God has provided a way of escape for those who will listen to Him.

I am thankful for faithful pastors and leaders who are boldly proclaiming the truth of God’s Word to those who will listen. We must pay attention to their teaching and not be enticed to follow the patterns of the world around us. The world may offer fortune and fame, but it will profit us nothing if we lose our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. He offers us living water, fellowship with Him here on earth, and eternity in Heaven.

John 7:37-38 “…. If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”

Prayer: Jesus, search our hearts today. Help us not to be led astray by false teachings. Show us if there are idols that have taken your place in our hearts, and as we repent, forgive us, and let the living water of your Holy Spirit flow freely once again.
