“And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.” Luke 2:7

There were probably many stables in and near Bethlehem, so how did the shepherds know where to go to find the Baby Jesus? The sheep that these shepherds were watching were the ones from which the unblemished lambs were chosen for the sacrifices in the temple in Jerusalem. No doubt the place where the newborn lambs were placed was well-known to the shepherds. So, when the angel told them they would find the baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger, they knew exactly where to go.

When the lambs were born, they were quickly wrapped tightly in cloth and placed in a manger, probably made of stone, for protection. The lambs for the sacrifices had to be without blemish.

Isn’t it amazing, how God’s plan is so perfect – when we think of the timing and the circumstances of the birth of Jesus?

I would like to share this poem that I wrote last year and hope you all enjoy it.

The Perfect Lamb

Lonely shepherds on the hillside diligently watching sheep

Faithfully fulfilling their duty while other folks were asleep.

When clouds of glory filled the sky, everyone bowed low in fear

Until an angel bid them rise, “Fear not, we bring you good cheer.”

“For unto you is born this day the one you’ve been waiting for.

You will find Him in the manger, in swaddling cloths wrapped secure.”

These men needed no direction, knew exactly where to find

The Saviour whom God had promised, so they left their flocks behind.

Though just a lowly feeding trough, a manger made of stone,

Made to protect the newborn lambs born for one purpose alone.

Destined for temple sacrifice as atonement for men’s sin.

Wrapped safely in swaddling cloths, they lay peacefully within.

This night it held a special lamb, one destined for death as well.

From Heaven’s glory, Christ had come and as man on earth would dwell.

In awe and wonder, the shepherds gazed quietly at His face

The One who would bring peace to earth, showing mercy, love, and grace.

Kneeling there in adoration, they gave thanks to God above.

Knowing the perfect Lamb of God was sent from heaven with love.

God Himself had come to the world to become our sacrifice.

On Calvary He would give His all, Lamb of God, He paid the price.

He’s no longer in a manger, we can find Him anywhere.

He gave His life for you and me and His love is everywhere.

His Word gives us the directions, He’s the Life, the Truth, the Way.

Just open your heart to Jesus and accept His love today.
