Minimalism and a minimalist lifestyle have become the new catchphrase in recent years. The idea is when you remove the unnecessary stuff, you free up time and space to focus on the things that matter in life. The famous organizer and author Marie Kondo took that idea to a new level. Rule 6 of the KonMari Method says, “Keep only those things that speak to the heart and discard items that no longer spark joy. Thank them for their service-then let them go.”     A few years ago, my husband and I became empty nesters. As our youngest son married…

I now have a smartwatch. And may I add that sometimes it seems to be much smarter than I am! But I’m pleased to say I’m learning how to operate it somewhat efficiently. I rest (at a heart rate of 70bpm according to the smartwatch) in the hope that I…

“Therefore I will look unto the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me. Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light unto me.” (Micah 7:7-8 KJV) Have you ever tried to walk through a room when the lights were out? You squint and try to see where you are going. You try not to step on something, run into something, or fall over something. You may even try to see the layout of the room in…

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6 Yesterday we posed a question, “What does God require of me?” God requires different things from different people and at different seasons of our lives, His requirements may change. Today let us look at mothers of young children. This scripture in Proverbs is not a guarantee that if we do everything right as a mother, that our children will never depart from our teaching. We know it does not always work out that way. A better interpretation…

I love jigsaw puzzles. Finding the edge pieces to make the frame. Looking at the colors and shapes to find the exact fit. I love separating the pieces, so the actual assembling of the puzzle goes quickly. I often refer to the box lid to be sure everything is going according to plan. If I can’t see the big picture, frustration sets in. I am so glad to have a God who doesn’t need a box lid to put the pieces together. Even when I don’t see it, He’s working. He takes my prayers and answers them in ways beyond…

And at the seventh time he said, “Behold, a little cloud like a man’s hand is rising from the sea.” And he said, “Go up, say to Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.’” (I Kings 18:44, ESV) It had been a long day on Mount Carmel. Elijah, the lone prophet of the Lord, had faced off against 400 prophets of Baal and another 450 prophets of the grove. Not good odds, but if God is on your side, that’s enough. God’s prophet flung out a challenge. Each would build an altar and sacrifice an…
