Luke 8:16-18 MSG “No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a washtub or shoves it under the bed. No, you set it up on a lamp stand so those who enter the room can see their way. We’re not keeping secrets; we’re telling them. We’re not hiding things; we’re bringing everything out into the open. So be careful that you don’t become misers of what you hear. Generosity begets generosity. Stinginess impoverishes.” I have two daughters, who at this very moment, are fighting over a cardboard box. The day is winding down, we are all tired, and emotions seem…
Philippians 3:20 “But we are citizens of heaven where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for Him to return as our Savior.” Have you ever had one of those days where you think to yourself “I cannot wait for heaven!” Everything seems to fall apart before…
“This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24 Another month has come to an end and another week begins. Many of us will be gathering in our church building with restrictions. Others may still be watching the service online.…

“For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come” (Hebrews 13:14, English Standard Version). We live in a very mobile society. Statistics say on average Americans move slightly more than eleven times during their lifetimes. Europeans average about four moves. Reasons we move vary—job relocations, changes in the family, renting to ownership, moving up or scaling down. If you’re like me, you don’t really enjoy all the sorting and packing, but you’ve probably done it several times already and more moves may be in your future. Various articles describe the best and worst…
“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23-24 This week I looked at the shoes that I have been wearing around the house for the last few years. The band is “I Love Comfort.” Though shabby and worn, they are comfortable and familiar. They still have good support, but I know they are not suitable to wear out in public. It is time to choose something else to wear in their stead. I am not…
Giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 5:20, ESV) I know that Thanksgiving (the holiday) is past for this year, but thanksgiving (the attitude) should still be part of every day. I woke today with the word thankful on my mind and praise in my heart. Does that mean my day has been perfect? Not at all. As I write this, I’m sitting in a chilly house waiting for a repairman to fix my suddenly temperamental furnace. I can choose to focus on what I don’t have (heat)…
I was fearful of thunderstorms as a child – the loud bursts of thunder and streaks of lightning as they lit the sky. I recall descending the stairs from my bedroom on numerous occasions during the early morning hours and kneeling in our living room in the darkness, asking God for protection. After a while, I would work up the courage to climb the stairs and get back in my bed. As I grew older, I eventually overcame my fear of storms. However, other life circumstances occasionally brought fears and concerns: What was my purpose in life? What would I…
