“But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed” Isaiah 53:5 Easter this year will be so different for many of us. No family gatherings, no fellowship with church family, and no corporate worship to celebrate our risen Savior. The importance of Easter should not be diminished. Our typical routine and schedule has been interrupted, but celebrating, showing gratitude and  rejoicing because He’s alive is essential! Take a moment this weekend and shut yourself in with God. Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. John 19:1. This scripture is only 8 words long, but it holds a painful story. Crucifixion was a torturous death, but prior to Jesus being nailed to a cross to atone for your sins (and mine), He suffered agonizing pain by being scourged. Scourging is so severe that it could be fatal. It was more than just physical torment, but it was the debasement of character with the intent to belittle and demean an individual. When reading the Bible, it is sometimes easy to skim right over a key phrase. It’s so familiar, we just hurry on past without stopping to consider the full meaning and how it might apply to our lives.
