- I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High, (Psalm 9:2, Holy Bible, King James Version). The simplified meaning of rejoice is to be happy. When things go our way, rejoicing is easy. Excitement flows when expectations are fulfilled. Smiles and laughter are automatic. The secondary meaning of rejoice is to make someone happy. The New Living Translation reads “I will be filled with joy because of you.” Reverse rejoicing, joy because of others, is what the Psalmist had in mind. Happiness flowed when he rejoiced in God.
