hands“Now Jesus and His disciples went out to the towns of Caesarea Philippi; and on the road He asked His disciples, saying to them, ‘Who do men say that I am?’ So they answered, ‘John the Baptist; but some say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.’ He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Peter answered and said to Him, ‘You are the Christ.’” (Mark 8:27-29, Holy Bible, New King James).

Opinion surveys are effective in local issues. Online surveys assess consumer habits. Instructors distribute printed surveys at the close of workshops and seminars to determine if the experience met the teacher’s expectations. When Jesus asked for public opinion, His disciples replied with a variety of responses. When Jesus asked for personal understanding, Peter had the correct answer, “You are the Christ.”

Prayer: Thank You, Lord Jesus, for asking me this same question. Like Peter, I know You are the Messiah. Amen.

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing,” (John 15:5, Holy Bible, New King James).

California is known for its abundant agriculture, especially vineyards. The city I call home promotes the valley vineyards as main tourist attractions. The local community college cultivates vineyards and offers related vintner courses. We are all in awe from the beauty of grapes sheltered beneath green leaves, but we seldom speak about the vine and the branches. Jesus emphasized the importance of the fruit-bearing branches being connected to Him, the source. He spoke plainly, “Without Me you can do nothing.”

Prayer: Lord Jesus, keep me connected to You, the source. Amen.

“He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west” (Psalm 103:12, Holy Bible, New Living Translation).

A questionnaire lists options to circle or check physical ailments. “Have you or anyone else in your family ever had. . . ?” followed by medical conditions. A driver’s license application questions, “Have you ever lost consciousness except during surgery?” Financial forms demand an answer to “Have you ever filed bankruptcy?” Employment applications include “Have you ever been convicted of a felony?”

EVER! Ever becomes forever―never to be erased―always demanding a response. When Jesus forgives your sins, He expunges “Have you ever?” With Him, yesterday is gone. Today is a new day; a fresh start.

Prayer: Thank You Lord for removing my past mistakes and giving me a fresh start. Amen.

“And this is the promise that He has promised us—eternal life,” (1John 2:25, Holy Bible, New King James).

Ask a dozen colleagues “Do you believe in eternity?” Responses will vary from silence to shrugs to comments that religious discussions aren’t allowed in the workplace. Chances are those who respond will say no. Ask a dozen born-again believers about eternal life and you will get smiles and positive reactions.

Scripture says Jesus lived to die, died to be resurrected and was resurrected to provide eternal life with Him. That’s a promise.

Prayer: Lord, I believe Your promise of eternal life. Amen.

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven” (Ecclesiastes 3:1, Holy Bible, King James Version).

Without the noticeable tick, tick, tick of a second hand, a digital clock moves from one minute after the hour to two. Three. Four. Five. Minutes march in silence until 59 transitions to double zero, marking a new hour. Hours glide toward a full day. Seven sunrises announce a new week. A month slips by, then two and three to a new season. Spring foliage dispels winter’s grip. Summer bursts into bloom. A blaze of red, brown, and gold hues blend into fall before icicles proclaim another winter. Seasons transition into a year. Purpose emerges in this cycle to bring hope to those who trust in God.

Prayer: Lord, let the seasons of my life proclaim my hope and confidence in You. Amen.

When Mary, the mother of Jesus, told Him the host at the marriage feast in Cana had run out of wine, Jesus said, “…that’s not our problem” (John 2:4,Holy Bible, New Living Translation). Mary brushed His comment aside and told the servants to follow His instructions, no matter what He told them to do. Later, when the timing was right, Jesus said “fill the jars with water”. Then He told the servants to dip a sample and take it to the master of the feast.

“A host always serves the best wine first,” he [the host] said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!” (Verse 10)

Jesus is never early. Never late. His timing is perfect.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for this example of perfect timing to produce a miracle. Amen.

Whether a story or a novel, a publication has at least one main character, usually a good guy, facing an obstacle. The story has three parts—a beginning, middle, and end. It is a journey to solve a problem that ends with a satisfactory conclusion. The biblical journey begins with the…

“Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these,” (Luke 12:27, Holy Bible, New King James).

The disciples worried about how to cover living expenses after they abandoned full-time careers, many of them commercial fishermen, to follow Jesus. In the past, they estimated their daily living by the weight of the full fish nets. Now, they walked with Jesus and worried. Jesus chose the simplicity of nature to ease their concerns. He compared the beauty of the lilies to King Solomon’s royal robes. They lilies won the contest.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, When I worry about tomorrow, remind me of this lesson among the lilies. Amen

“You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in Your word,” (Psalm 119:114, Holy Bible, King James).

Hide and Seek, a favorite childhood game of my nephews who lived on a farm, wasn’t my idea of fun. They loved to play in darkened, seldom-used outbuildings. Not me. I hated dust mites. I shuddered when I stumbled into large spider webs. I tried to get caught early in the game, leave the musty hiding places, and return to safe sunlight.

Not all hiding places are scary. The Psalmist offers the assurance that hiding in God is a place of safety, a shield against enemies. I am not afraid as I hide there today.

Prayer: Lord, I have hope in Your word. You are my hiding place. Amen.
