“His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.” Psalm 112:2

When God called Abraham to leave his homeland and travel to an unknown destination, He promised that his seed would multiply and through him all nations would be blessed. God renewed this promise again to Isaac and Jacob. As we read the stories in the Old Testament, we find that when the Jewish people trusted the Lord and obeyed His commandments they were blessed.

In Psalm 112 this promise is extended to those who fear God and delight in His commandments. We can claim it for our families today.

What constitutes a family?

Britannica.com describes a family as “a group of persons united by the ties of marriage, blood, or adoption, constituting a single household and interacting with each other in their respective social positions, usually those of spouses, parents, children, and siblings.”

When my father knelt in prayer in the old blacksmith shop over seventy-five years ago, he gave his life to the Lord and prayed for the salvation of his family. God heard that prayer and it has lived on through the years. Our family has been blessed, and today there are grandchildren and great-grandchildren active in various aspects of ministry. Prayers never die.

Psalm 127:3 “Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD.”

Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

We dedicate our children to the Lord. We teach them the best we can and pray God’s blessing over them. We cannot force them to serve the Lord. We release them into His hands and leave the results to Him. He has a plan and a purpose for each one of them, and we can safely trust Him to fulfill His plan.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the prayers of those who have gone on before us that still affect our families today. Thank you for the children that you entrust into our care. Help us to cover them with prayer and trust you to work out your plan for their lives.
