Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31-32, NKJV)

When Jesus was led to the judgment hall to stand before Pilate, the Jews accused, “He is a criminal.” But Jesus stated, “I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth.” Which one should Pilate believe? He asked, “What is truth?” (Read John 18:28-38.)

Today if we asked that same question, we would no doubt get a variety of answers. For some, truth is whatever they choose it to be. But just because someone believes something is true does not make it true. Truth is neither a feeling nor an opinion. Nor can truth be determined by what the majority think. Or by what makes us feel good. Truth is not relative. Truth is absolute, non-negotiable.

When it comes to our soul’s salvation, it is vital that we follow truth. We cannot allow ourselves to be swayed by philosophies and opinions that conflict with God’s Word. Anything that goes against the Word of God is not truth. Colossians 2:8 warns us:

“Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.”

Ephesians 6:11 instructs us to “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (NKJV). The first piece of the Christian’s armor listed is the belt of truth (verse 14). The belt might seem insignificant and not really “armor.” Belts were originally functional rather than something just worn for fashion. They could hold a pouch, tools, or a weapon. For a soldier, the belt secured the breastplate and held the scabbard (sword holder) in its proper place. But the belt was essential; it held everything together. If the belt is loosened, the breastplate falls off and the sword isn’t where it can be used quickly and effectively.

Truth matters. Truth is essential to the believer and “holds it all together.” I would not want to base my eternal destiny on a feeling, an opinion, or a speculation. I need to buckle on the belt of truth first. With truth firmly in place, the breastplate of righteousness (His righteousness, not mine) will be in position to protect my heart and other vital organs. My sword, the Word, is at hand for my defense.

“Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” (John 17:17, NKJV)

Have you ever tried to decide which version of a situation is true? When two people give differing versions of a situation, it can be confusing. Which is true? If you are like me, you will give more credence to the one who has a track record of always telling the truth. We know their character; we have witnessed their integrity.

I trust the character of Jesus. He is Truth. I will follow His Word!

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. (John 14:6, NKJV)

Lord, help me to always align my life with Your Word. You are truth, and Your truth sets me free from sin and condemnation.
