“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” (1 Peter 5:8 in the King James Version of the Holy Bible).
Years ago I loved to go to the San Francisco Zoo on Tuesday to watch the lions. On my day off I would take my pastor’s wife and son on outings to the zoo. The staff had not fed the lions for a couple of days so on Tuesday you could see roaring lions at their best (or worst). Every time I read this verse my mind goes back to those roaring lions.
Our devotional verse compares the devil to a roaring lion. I think some people have forgotten that Satan is our adversary. The Apostle Peter had several close encounters with Satan and reminded us not only of his existence but of his tactics. Satan stalks us to see if we will fall prey to him. He is not our friend.
Prayer: Lord keep me close to You. When I stay close to You, the enemy backs off. I don’t want to be so drunk on the cares of this life that I am not aware of the devil’s tactics.
