“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way.” (Psalm 37:23 NKJV)

While visiting my parents at the hospital, I was happy to find a parking spot near the entrance closest to our ward. As I approached the door, an aide pushing an empty wheelchair was blocking my way. I politely waited, then followed her inside. She looked at me oddly, then went on.

A few steps later I realized that the entrance we’d just come through was locked. She unlocked it with a card. The timing was so perfect that I almost missed it. She must have thought I was quite bold. Thinking back, I realized, Oh yes. That door locks early. I should have known, but I wasn’t paying attention. I should have had to walk to a different entrance. That’s not a big deal, but it had been a long day. My dad was sick. My arms were full of bags. I was tired. It was cold… I had a dozen reasons to be happy for that opened door, and I hadn’t even said, “Thank you.”

God reminded me in that moment how He always sees ahead, from the monumental to the small events of our lives. As we bumble through our own imperfect plans, He is watching and waiting to help. His timing is so perfect that we may not even notice all the good He does for us. Only in Heaven will we clearly see all the ways He has ordered our steps, but it’s not too soon today to tell Him “Thank you.”
