“If God doesn’t build the house, the builders only build shacks. If God doesn’t guard the city, the night watchman might as well nap. It’s useless to rise early and go to bed late, and work your worried fingers to the bone. Don’t you know he enjoys giving rest to those he loves?” (Psalm 127:1-2, The Message)

Why do we overbook ourselves to the point that we are beyond exhausted at the end of every day only to do the same thing the next day? I know that in my own experience, opting out of helping people – church related or not – has always been very difficult. No matter what, I feel like I will hurt somebody by not helping them when they need it or anger somebody because I chose to rest rather than go out. Yes, we need to be selfless, but its unlikely that it is His will for us to work ourselves to the bone. I’ve come close to losing my marbles a few times and I’m sure I’m not alone. Only God can help us achieve a healthy balance in our lives.

Prayer: I pray that you would help us to find balance in our lives, Lord. Give us wisdom to turn down opportunities if they are not your will, and I also pray that you protect us from exhausting ourselves. Help us today, God. Amen.
