“Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.”
James 5:7-8 ESV
It’s important to know your strengths and weaknesses. For example, I do not know how to build a house. The best I can do is possibly, more than likely not, hang a picture on the wall. My husband would testify to this and show multiple holes in the wall hidden behind pictures.
However, I do know the foundation is the most important part of a new build. For your new home to stand firm, it must be built upon a high-quality foundation. This foundation must be equipped to support the weight of the structure above it.
I’m sure there is much more to it, but to break it down, if the foundation is flawed, everything above is flawed. An unstable foundation creates a domino effect of destruction. There will be a danger of cracks, leaning, and collapse.
The same applies spiritually. What is your life built upon? Is it your strength, power, and abilities? Perhaps it is your wealth. Maybe you have centered your life around one person, trusting in them to supply your every need.
Establish in the above scripture is translated as “strengthen, stedfastly set.” In Biblical usage, it means to make stable, place firmly, render constant, and confirm.
Christ is our firm foundation, and the only One who can support the weight of our lives. We must be established (stable, firmly placed, constant) in Him.
I am reminded of an old song as I write this. The lyrics say this…
If your life is built upon God and His Word, you can rest assured today that no matter what comes your way, you cannot be shaken. No word, no lie, and no storm can destroy that which is set upon God.
