“By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.” Hebrews 11:8
I never get tired of reading Abraham’s story in the Old Testament. There are so many lessons we can learn from this man who was so faithful to God. He was willing to leave everything he had and start on a journey to an unknown place, simply trusting that the Lord would be with him. The Lord led him step by step until he finally reached the land of Canaan. There once again, God appeared to him and renewed the promise that the land would one day be his.
“And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land. And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him.” Genesis 12:6-7
It is significant that upon hearing from the Lord, he built an altar, a place of prayer and communion with the Lord. As we read on in the story, we find that this was his practice wherever he pitched his tent.
Abraham had been given a promise that seemed impossible, but he faithfully obeyed, and this obedience caught God’s attention. The writer of Romans describes his relationship with God:
Romans 4:20-22 “He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.”
Just as Abraham was called to a life of separation, and received God’s approval and blessings, so we are called to separate ourselves from the world, and in doing He has promised to bless us and reward us.
II Corinthians 6:17-18 “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.”
Matthew 11:28-30 “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Prayer: Lord Jesus, we are so thankful that you have called us to follow you. Help us to lay aside anything that would keep us from obeying your call. Help us to place ourselves upon the altar, submitting to your will, and thus enjoying the precious promises that you have given us.
