“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” John 8:12

Have you ever been in a place of total darkness? Years ago, our family visited a cave and when we were about halfway through, the guide turned off all the lights. It was so dark; we could not even see our hands in front of our faces. My husband had a phobia about being in a tight, dark place, and he immediately wanted to turn around and go back the way we had come. Thankfully, the guide turned the lights back on quickly and all was well.

It is hard for our minds to grasp that there ever was a time when our world was in complete darkness. In Genesis 1:3-5 we read that God spoke the words and light appeared. He then divided the light from the darkness. On day four, He placed the sun in the sky to be a light by day and the moon by night. We look every morning to see if the sun is shining, and then again at night for the moon.

That same God who created our world, and gave us light, is the One who laid aside His splendour and came to earth as a man. The world was filled with spiritual darkness, but by His death on Calvary, Jesus brought light into the world. The scriptures tell us that when the Spirit left His body on the cross, that deep darkness covered the earth. But then, He did not remain in the grave, He rose again and became the first fruits of the resurrection.

As our scripture text says, when we let Jesus shine His light into our hearts, we no longer walk in darkness but have the light of life.

Matthew 5:14-16 “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Jesus, the great I AM, is the light of the world, but as His followers, we have a responsibility to represent Him to the world. The way we live each day should be patterned after Him.  Our words and our actions should being glory and honour to His Name, so that others will desire to know Him.

Jesus, thank you for bringing light and life to this world. Let your Holy Spirit guide us each day in the way of righteousness, that others may see and desire You.
