“The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.” Psalm 16:5

The NIV reads this way: “Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup, you have made my lot secure.”

The word “assignment” is one we are all well acquainted with.  In school the teachers assign projects that follow certain guidelines and meet deadlines.  At work the boss assigns a job to be done and expects it to be done in a certain way and in a certain time. These assignments are for a short time and once they are finished, we can set them aside and forget about them.

But the assignment that the Lord has given us lasts for a lifetime.  Even before we were born, He knew us, and had a plan and a purpose for our lives.  Some of you may have been born in a Christian home and have known the ways of the Lord for all of your life.  Others may have not had that privilege, but somewhere along the way, God sent someone into your life to tell you the good news of salvation. Whichever group you belong in, you can be assured that He has something for you to do to further His kingdom.

It is His desire that we give our all to Him and live a life that is a testimony to the world around us.  He has given each of us individual talents and abilities and all He asks is that we dedicate those to Him and use them for is His honour and glory. We cannot measure our lives by others or try to be like someone else. There are times when we may be tempted to take on someone else’s assignment, but if we get involved in too many things, we cannot fulfill the requirements that the Lord has given us.  As we obey His Word and listen for the Spirit’s leading, He will direct us and show us each day what He wants us to do.

The second part of that verse says He has made our lot secure.  What a precious promise that is to know that each day is in His hands.  Our foundation is on a solid rock, and He will not allow us to fall.  There may be days when it seems like everything is going wrong, but we can trust in the words of Romans 8:28:

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

Prayer:  Thank you Lord Jesus for salvation, and for your Holy Spirit that guides us and directs us each day.  Help us to faithful in fulfilling your plan for our lives.
