“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105, NKJV) When I moved into a new (to me) home several years ago, I invested in changing all the lightbulbs in the house over to LED lights. Although they cost more than other types of bulbs, I thought it was worth the investment. Good lighting is important—something that we quickly appreciate when a power outage leaves us sitting in the dark. I once lived in an area that seemed to have an unusual number of outages. I quickly learned to keep flashlights, candles, and even an…

Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” (Matthew 9:37-38 ESV) When the multitudes gathered and Jesus began to teach, He spoke of things that related to their everyday lives.  They understood when He taught parables about planting seed, types of soil, or gathering the harvest. They lived in an agrarian society, and several of the Jewish feast days were related to times of harvest. When Jesus told His disciples that there was a bountiful harvest to…

I told them how the hand of my God had been favorable to me and also about the king’s words which he had spoken to me. Then they said, “Let us arise and build.” So they put their hands to the good work. Nehemiah 2:18 NASB To better understand how Nehemiah arrived at this moment, we must first go back in time. We read in 2 Kings 25:1 how “Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his whole army.” What follows in the coming days would lead to the destruction of Jerusalem and leave many of its people dead or in…

Last week was my birthday. One more year.  One more candle.  Only this year I turned the big 40! A new decade… I can hardly believe it. I use to cringe at the thought of growing one year older, but now, I realize that it is a gift. I know there are those who have walked into eternity who would have gladly accepted grey hair, wrinkles, sunspots, and whatever else comes with aging. Growing old is not a curse, it is a blessing. Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have…

In the meantime … Jesus was traveling to Jerusalem. In the midst of His journey—as He came through a village on the way, He heard a group of lepers crying out to Him from a distance. Why not?! What did they have to lose? Perhaps they saw this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to snag some mercy for their plight—on the fly. Luke doesn’t tell us that Jesus stopped, touched them, or even broke His stride. It simply says that when He saw the lepers, He said, “Go. Show yourselves to the priest.” In other words, “Go get your life back.”…
