“He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.” (Proverbs 16:32, NKJV) Self-control. Discipline. Willpower. The King James Version of the Bible calls it temperance. Whatever word we use, self-indulgence is easier than self-control. Ask anyone who abandoned their New Year’s resolutions sometime mid-January. Self-control is something we develop in our lives, not something we are born with. It isn’t an “either you have it or you don’t” characteristic. Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines self-control as “restraint exercised over one’s impulses, emotions, or desires.”  It is our ability…

“And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.” (I Thessalonians 5:14, ESV) Have you ever walked into a classroom and noticed a poster on the wall listing the rules of conduct the teacher expects within the class? The rules may…

“This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24. Ready or not, we have entered a new year. If you are like me, you are wondering just what it will hold. In our area, we are under a lot of restrictions and this time they are affecting the church more than they have in the past. As we look back over the past two years, we know that the Lord was not taken by surprise. He knew what was going to happen, and He had the church prepared to meet…

Someone sent me the following in an e-mail message. It had no title so I entitled it, “If.”

If the economy collapses, He is still my Provider!
If the healthcare is unsustainable, He is still my Healer!
If disaster shall come, He is still my Protector!
If the powers that be strip me of my patriotism, He is still my banner!
If my life should be taken, He is still my Salvation!
He is my God. He is Jesus, the Way, the Truth and the Life!

Prayer: I am so glad that You are my God and You are the same yesterday, today and forever. The world I live in is so “iffy” it makes it hard to plan anything. You never change. You can handle any “if” that comes along. Amen!

“Only do not two things unto me: then will I not hide myself from thee. Withdraw thine hand far from me: and let not thy dread make me afraid.” Job 13:20-21 Job had been suffering not only from physical pain, but from the pain of losing his children and his possessions. This prayer that he offered to God asked for two things: that the Lord would always be there for Him, and that He would take away his fear. Many people going through times of suffering and loss blame God for their troubles. They think that God has forsaken them,…

“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:”  Philippians 1:6 I recently did a survey where the question was: What is the main thing that keeps you sound and grounded every day? What keeps you smiling knowing life is worth it? There were several choices and the results were interesting. A lot of people said it was their friends and family, some said pets, and only a few chose their jobs or career. 26% said it was their relationship with God and spirituality.…
