Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. (Mark 4:39, Holy Bible, New King James)

A multitude listened to Jesus as he sat in a boat teaching near the seaside. When evening came, Jesus told His disciples to depart to the other shore. It started out as a routine journey, so Jesus took a nap. While He slept, a storm arose. Winds sent waves of water into the boat and brought fear to the disciples. They awoke Jesus. “Don’t you care that we’re perishing?” they said.

Jesus rebuked the wind and calmed the sea. They were astonished that Jesus brought peace in the storm by His words.

Prayer: Lord, my faith falters when life’s storms overwhelm me, and I feel like the disciples who feared they would drown. In these times of despair, be with me and calm my storms. Amen.
