“But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.”  (Genesis 19:26 in the King James Version of the Holy Bible) God told Lot to flee to mountains and warned him not to look back. For whatever reason, Lot’s wife did not take God’s command…

“Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health in the bones”  (Proverbs 16:24). Often I hear people say they don’t understand the Bible.  When asked if they’ve read it, the answer is, “No.”  Understanding comes by reading the Word.  I don’t know how to exist without…

While flying a plane in thick fog, the pilot cannot be sure of his direction unless he gives full attention to his instruments. In a thunderstorm, the turbulence can toss the plane about; the darkness within the clouds may cause disorientation. Sometimes the pilot will feel as though he is going up or down or turning around. But he cannot depend on his feelings. Only the gyros can be trusted, so the pilot must hang on to the controls in the turbulence, and discipline his mind to concentrate on the instruments-not on the storm.

There is a parallel spiritual truth for the believer in troubled times.

Undisciplined feelings will cause disorientation-even a crash- unless we keep ourselves stabilized by the facts of God’s Word.

Not being prepared to stay overnight I did not have my own Bible with me, so I picked up the Gideon Bible that was in the drawer of my son’s room at Carolina Hospital. Engraved on the front cover was “Thinking of you – The Gideons.” God gave His Word with us in mind. He inspired holy men of old to write. How do I know it’s inspired? As one great Bible teacher said, “Because it inspires me!”

2 Timothy 3:16 reads,

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for instruction in righteousness” (King James Version of the Holy Bible).

Prayer: Today I want to thank You especially, Lord, for Your Word. When I struggle with decisions I must make, I can read Your Word and find the answer. Time spent in Your Word is profitable and uplifting.

Have you ever tried finding your way in dark, unfamiliar surroundings without a light? When the power goes out in your home unexpectedly, you reach for a flashlight and hope that the batteries are still good.

Stumbling around in the darkness is not a pleasant experience. Even in familiar settings, it is easy to lose our sense of direction. When we find ourselves enshrouded in darkness, uneasiness rises within us and fear clutches our throats.

As we walk through life, we can lose our way too. Darkness can descend and which way to go is no longer clear.

Prayer: Dear God, You told us that Your Word is our light. “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105). Thank You for giving us direction, hope, and reassurance.

“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap” (Galatians 6:9 in the King James Version of the Holy Bible). Deception is an old trick Satan has used throughout the ages. He used it on Eve as recorded in the Book of Genesis and he is still trying to deceive today. Deception causes us to question the truth of God’s Word. The Apostle Paul was aware of Satan’s tactics when he wrote these words of admonition to the Galatians in our devotional verse. Paul warned the believers in Galatia not to be deceived because God will not be mocked or laughed at. The end result of falling for Satan’s deception is we will reap what we sow.
Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for Your Word that gives me clear direction. Keep me from falling prey to the trick of deception. One day the Deceiver will be cast into Hell and we’ll be rid of this nuisance forever. In Jesus Name! Amen and Amen!
