Thank you is one of the first phrases a child learns from a parent after please. The Psalmist tells us to make thanksgiving a habit each time we enter into the presence of the Lord. This reminder is more than a lesson in etiquette. On this day dedicated to gratitude, it is a must-do, top-of-the-list reminder for the children of God.

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name (Psalm 100:4, Holy Bible, King James).

Prayer : A gratitude of praise rises from my heart to You Lord on this Thanksgiving day. Amen.

We are born with mental reasoning capacity for everyday living. Along the way, we make advance choices that affect our long-term goals. In extreme situations where quick decisions are required, adrenaline powers the human body to do extraordinary feats on a moment’s notice. Knowing we would have questions about eternity, God reminds us to listen to reason—His reason. He has created the one-size solution for all.
Prayer : Eternal God, I am blessed by these ancient words that provide a reason for eternal hope. Amen.

Zebedee, a commercial fisherman, had hired men working for him, yet James and John, toiled alongside them mending their father’s nets. What was it about those two sons of Zebedee that prompted Jesus to choose them as disciples soon after he had chosen Simon and Andrew, two other fishermen? I like to think it was because Jesus saw their willingness to work alongside hired men for the greater purpose of making their father’s nets stable for the next draw. When Jesus called them, they understood the greater purpose of being fishers of men and followed Him.
“When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets. And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him,” (Mark 1:18-20, Holy Bible, New King James).
Prayer: Thank You Lord for this example of how You called ordinary people to become Your disciples. You are still making room for workers in your kingdom. Amen.

Rising before dawn, there is nothing more glorious than the first glimpse of sunrise when light seeps through darkness and infuses the landscape with color. The sun arcs at midday before the routine descent begins. At evening, the glowing sun disappears with a flourish of spectacular color in the repetitious sundown cycle. The Psalmist honored the majesty of God with this declaration, “From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD’s name is to be praised, (Psalm 113:3, Holy Bible, King James Version). Morning, evening or anytime is a good time to praise the Lord!

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Your glory is reflected in sunrise and sundown. Your name is worthy to be praised at all times. Amen.

A staple at every meal in my childhood, homemade biscuits or buttered cinnamon toast in the oven disappeared from my hurried life when I became the cook. Popup toast took over. It moved to second place in winter days when instant oatmeal warmed my mornings. Homemade pancakes, a Saturday treat, succumbed to dry mix or microwaveable frozen rounds. Toast made occasional appearances at lunch sandwiching tuna salad or bacon, lettuce and tomato. Crackers have replaced cornbread, accompanying cold-weather stew. Bible readings, God’s daily bread, seem to have followed the natural bread route.
No time to devour a full stack of biblical pancakes from Old Testament declarations. Mumbled recitations of the Twenty-third Psalm alternating with Our Father Who Art in Heaven are pop-up toast. An online devotional and Scripture reading by key word sandwiches busy days. An easy-read Psalm in the evenings becomes the diet for family Bible study. Time to put daily bread back into my diet.

“Give us this day our daily bread, (Matthew 6:11, Holy Bible King James Version).

Prayer : Lord Jesus, I devoured a devotion, an online Scripture and searched the Bible for truth to strengthen me today. Your word is my daily bread. Amen.

I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High, (Psalm 9:2, Holy Bible, King James Version). The simplified meaning of rejoice is to be happy. When things go our way, rejoicing is easy. Excitement flows when expectations are fulfilled. Smiles and laughter are automatic. The secondary meaning of rejoice is to make someone happy. The New Living Translation reads “I will be filled with joy because of you.” Reverse rejoicing, joy because of others, is what the Psalmist had in mind. Happiness flowed when he rejoiced in God.
Prayer : Eternal God, I praise Your name and rejoice in You. Amen.

“Come and see what our God has done, what awesome miracles he performs for people! (Psalm 66:5 from the Holy Bible, New Living Translation).
Awesome! This overused word is interwoven into conversations to describe anything above average. It is attached to artistic performances, gourmet foods, clothing accessories, websites, widgets, gadgets, and travels. The King James Version translates awesome as “terrible.” Imagine this scene. We’re looking over the splendid (awesome) Grand Canyon. I smile and shout out “Terrible!” You wouldn’t understand my reaction. Others nearby might wonder at my absence of appreciation. If I said “Awesome!” you would understand how impressed I am with God’s creation. That’s the intention of this modern translation when the Psalmist recognizes the magnificent miracles. Awesome! That word belongs to God.
Prayer : Lord, when I see Your creations and witness Your miracles, I am overwhelmed. All I can say is awesome! Amen.

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest,” (Matthew 11:28 Holy Bible New King James). At the end of a workday, are you too weary to walk to the bus stop? Maybe you have to sit in your vehicle in the parking lot for a few minutes before battling your way home on crowded highways. If you’re a stay-at-home parent, you aren’t exempt from stress. Jesus understands your circumstances. He invites all of us to find rest in Him.
Prayer: Lord, daily routine pushes me beyond my endurance level. Only in You can I find rest. Amen.

“And this is the promise that He has promised us—eternal life,” (1John 2:25, Holy Bible, New King James).

Ask a dozen random people if they believe in eternity and the answers will lean toward negatives. Ask a dozen born-again believers about eternal life and you will get smiles added to positive reactions. Jesus lived to die, died to be resurrected and was resurrected to provide eternal life to humanity. The simplicity of His promise to us is eternal life. Not alone, but with Him because we have His promise “that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life,” (John 3:15, Holy Bible, New King James).
Prayer: Thank You Lord Jesus for Your promise. Amen.
