“And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God,” (Mark 11:22, Holy Bible, King James Version). I called my car repair shop a few minutes after closing time. The recording advised me to call back during normal business hours. How disappointing! I called God in prayer and He answered. What comfort God brings! His business hours are timeless.

Prayer: Thank You, Lord Jesus, for the many times You’ve heard my prayers. In frightening times and in the stillness of the night, you are always there. Amen.

“He caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were hushed,” (Psalm 107:29, Holy Bible, New American Standard). I like to stand on a desolate Pacific Ocean beach and watch the waves from incoming tide crash against rocks, pounding surf roaring in my ears, waves washing over my feet. The exhilaration is short lived because I can only take so much of that tumultuousness before I’m ready to swish my feet in a quiet stream. I feel the same way about storms in my life. I appeal to God to hush the squall soon after it begins. In tempest or peace, He responds to my needs.
Prayer: Thank You Lord for storms that let me appreciate quiet times. Amen.

“Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD” (Psalm 27:14, Holy Bible, King James Version). You’re on time for a medical appointment, but ‘Someone will be right with you,” multiplies into an hour of waiting. You’re standing in a checkout line only to have the closed sign placed on the counter before your turn. You’re stuck in traffic when all lanes but yours are inching ahead. You move to another lane and it stops moving. Life is filled with waiting times. So why the impatience with God when He asks us to wait for a response to prayers? The Psalmist says that waiting time is productive. When we wait with courage, God rewards us with strength.
Prayer: Lord, strengthen my heart while I wait for Your answer. Amen.

“No, for all the nations of the world are but a drop in the bucket. They are nothing more than dust on the scales. He picks up the whole earth as though it were a grain of sand,” (Isaiah 40:15, Holy Bible, New Living Translation).” I’ve heard this metaphor—a drop in the bucket—since childhood. It puts things into perspective to recognize God’s greatness. Imagine a God so omnipotent He sees 6.9 billion people inhabiting seven continents as a grain of sand. Yet in His greatness, He recognizes me.
PrayerEternal God, I’m awed that in the vastness of the universe, a drop in the bucket, You recognize me as one of Your children. Amen.

“First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world” (Romans 1:8, Holy Bible, King James Version). Apostle Paul in this writing to the Christians at Rome didn’t speak of collective education, business knowledge or personal abilities. He commended them for their faith. No matter what else they possessed, the prominent attribute everyone in the known world had heard about the Christians in Rome was their faith in Jesus.
Prayer: Lord, let my faith be so strong others know You are my priority. Amen.

“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man,” (Ecclesiastes 12:13, Holy Bible, King James Version). A defense attorney near the end of a courtroom trial brings a final summation to the jury for deliberation. With dramatic emotions, the attorney attempts to persuade the jury that her client has not violated the law. She asks the jury to proclaim the defendant innocent of the charge. In Ecclesiastes, the writer gives us a different type of summation, clear and concise. He declares that we are to fear God and keep His commandments. It’s not open for discussion or jury vote. God will judge whether each of us have kept this individual obligation.

Prayer: Lord, I’m grateful for this Scripture that reminds me that my basic purpose in life is to follow You. Only You know whether I have met that goal. Amen.

“But we are descendants of Abraham,” they said. “We have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean, ‘You will be set free’?” Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin,” (Holy Bible, John 8:33-34, New Living Translation). I was born in the United States of America, the land of freedom. When the red, white and blue flag unfurls, it’s my assurance that freedom belongs to me. Like these descendents of Abraham who questioned Jesus, I’ve never been a slave or endured servant, but tentacles of sin enslaved me until I claimed my inheritance through faith in Jesus Christ. He set me free.

prayer: Lord Jesus, I am no longer enslaved by sin because You set me free. Amen.

“Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways!” (Romans 11:33, Holy Bible, New Living Translation). When unexpected things happen, I question my future. Have I made a wrong turn, or has God remapped my route? Maybe neither. It could be a definitive learning curve to teach me to trust God’s ways.

prayer: Eternal God, I don’t understand the twists and turns You’ve placed in my life, but I will trust Your decisions. You know what’s best for me. Amen.

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:1-2, Holy Bible, King James Version). When the law condemns a guilty person, a sentence is required, from a short incarceration to a death sentence, depending on the crime. A parole or reverse ruling for a new trial brings hope of a better life but does not absolve the guilt. When a pardon is handed down, the prisoner is free as though the crime never happened. Jesus never paroles, only pardons with full freedom that leaves no condemnation—no guilt trip.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for my proclamation of pardon. You have erased my past and given me a future. Amen.
