“O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. O fear the Lord, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him. The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing.” Psalm 34:8-10 (KJV)

I really love food! I like trying new foods. I enjoy learning about spices different cultures use and I’m amazed at how a couple different spices can transform a dish. These scriptures conjure up those same feelings of excitement about food. “Taste and see that the Lord is good!”

I love how God uses the simple things in life to impart truth and revelation in our lives. I am a person who is almost constantly on a new quest to eat better; eat less junk; eat more fruits and vegetables. I am reminded of how our physical appetite parallels our spiritual appetite. One thing that I have learned is that substitutes often cause you to crave more. If you buy a jumbo diet soda, odds are you will once again crave another jumbo soda. Often it is better to drink or eat the real thing in moderation and be done with it.

We can definitely find the parallel with God in the substitute area.  Often we substitute other things – like fame, food, friends or fortune, for a true relationship with God. These things only leave an empty desire for more of the same empty things.

Psalm 34:8 (NKJV) says,

“taste and see that the Lord is good”

Psalm 34:10 (NKJV) reiterates the same,

“…those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.

Substitutes in the world leave us wanting, but can never fulfill. What is so amazing about God is that He also will leave us wanting, but He has the power to fill! His power makes room for more! When we spend time in His presence, He fills us. He satisfies and yet somehow leaves a desire for even more. He never disappoints! His depths are endless! A relationship with Him is an endless adventure!

Prayer: Lord, let me not be distracted by substitutes. Let me become overtaken with an appetite for more of you!
