“Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of thy countenance. In thy name shall they rejoice all the day: and in thy righteousness shall they be exalted. For thou art the glory of their strength: and in thy favour our horn shall be exalted.” Psalm 89:15-17

As I read this Psalm, I am reminded of a hymn written by Priscilla J. Owens that we used to sing a lot in church. Here is the first verse:

                    “We have heard the joyful sound:

                    Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

                    Spread the tidings all around:

                    Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

                    Bear the news to every land,

                    Climb the steeps and cross the waves;

                    Onward!—’tis our Lord’s command;

                    Jesus saves! Jesus saves!”

Our hearts and minds are bombarded with sounds every day, luring us with promises of better health, gaining riches, purchasing the newest merchandise, and becoming popular in this world. Above these sounds, the joyful news still rings loud and clear to all who will listen – “Jesus Saves.” There is no more joyful sound than the words of John 3: 16:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

The Psalmist said that those who had heard this joyful sound would walk in the light of God’s countenance. As we listen to His voice, we face each day with confidence knowing that we are not alone and that the Lord guides our every step.

Because we know His voice, we can fulfill the words of Paul in Philippians 4:4-7

“Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

The Lord gives us strength and favour as we walk with Him each day, listening to His voice, knowing that our sins have been forgiven and that we have hope of spending eternity with the Lord.

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:1-2

I trust that everyone who is reading this today has heard that joyful sound and opened your hearts to the Lord Jesus Christ. He gave His life for each of us on Calvary and desired that all would be saved. He is just a prayer away; all you must do is call.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord Jesus, for the price you paid for our redemption and for your still small voice that speaks peace to our hearts and guides us each day.
