God KNOWS our thoughts.

In our last study, we discussed how that God needs no interpreter. He KNOWS the contents of the heart of every person—every idea, notion, intention, and belief. He knows the precise moment a heart is ready to receive the gift of His Spirit. That’s because the Spirit of God is continually “reading” and INTERPRETING our spirit—even before we can fully comprehend and “know” our own heart.

“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”  (Romans 8:26-27 KJV)

In fact, God knows our hearts so well that, when He gives us the Holy Ghost, He Himself takes over and “interprets” His thoughts in HIS LANGUAGE through our lips!  We call it “speaking in tongues,” but it’s actually the Master Interpreter skipping the translation into OUR own language and allowing us to “speak of the wonderful works of God”—in HIS! The language may be totally “unknown” to us, but it’s NOT to Him!!

“They were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:4 KJV)

Wonder of wonders—sometimes the Holy Spirit even allows us to “interpret” for GOD in a language unknown to us but KNOWN to others within earshot! The Master Interpreter allows us to speak FOR HIM as “a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not.” (1 Cor. 14:22 KJV) … proving, without a doubt, that what Man in all his learning and knowledge could never do—GOD CAN!!

My daughter, while attending Bible college, regularly participated in evening student body prayer meetings. One night, as she knelt in a corner of the chapel, she was lost in the Spirit, pouring out her praise in “God’s language.” After the curfew bell rang and as she headed back to her dorm, a fellow student who had just returned from South America tapped her shoulder and said, “I didn’t know you spoke Spanish!” She looked at him blankly and said, “I don’t.” Apparently, God had intercepted her praise and delivered it … in perfect Spanish. It was a language unknown to her, but not unknown to the listener beside her, whose faith perhaps needed a boost that day. Global missionaries can tell hundreds of stories like this—no one could fake this or make it up. How can it happen? ONLY the SPIRIT of the ONE TRUE GOD!

“Knowledge like this is too AMAZING for me.  It is beyond my reach, and I cannot fathom it.” (Psalm 139:6 ISV)

When God shares His Holy Spirit with the heart of a willing believer, that person WILL glorify God in a language he/she does not know or understand. But it is not the “speaking in tongues” that is the gift. The ability to praise God in an unknown language is merely the evidence of the gift—the gift wrap—not the gift itself. The GIFT is God’s Holy Spirit—His thought center—suddenly coming to reside in a believer’s heart—forever. “Have YOU received the Holy Ghost since YOU believed?”

Prayer: Dear LORD, I’m available to You. Speak through me and let Your Word and Your Will be expressed through my voice and my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Beautifully written! We’re studying and memorizing the book of Acts this year in our Christian school, and I’ll use your devotional to further explain the wonderful gift of the Holy Ghost and speaking in tongues!
