There are moments when life leaves us standing still—not because we have nowhere to go, but because we aren’t sure which way to turn. The path ahead may be unfamiliar, the answers may seem out of reach, and the silence can make us wonder if we’ve somehow lost our way.

But what if, in those moments, God isn’t waiting for us to figure everything out?

What if He is asking us a question?

“Where are you?”

I’ve noticed that God often answers my questions with one of His own.

Throughout Scripture, God asked questions of people who found themselves in difficult circumstances. Of course, God is omniscient—He knows all things. Psalm 147:5 reminds us, “His understanding is beyond measure” (ESV). So why would a God who knows everything ask questions?

Perhaps because His questions are not meant to give Him information. They are meant to give us revelation.

After Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, God came looking for them and asked Adam, “Where are you?” (Genesis 3:9, ESV). He later asked Eve, “What is this that you have done?” (verse 13).

God already knew the answers. Yet His questions gave Adam and Eve an opportunity to step out of hiding, face what had happened, and begin the journey back toward Him.

God doesn’t need to know where you are.

You need to know where you are.

Maybe you’ve been following your own plans instead of God’s direction. Maybe busyness has crowded out His voice. Perhaps disappointment, fear, or guilt has caused you to retreat into a hiding place of your own making.

His question still reaches us today: Where are you?

It is not a question of condemnation. It is an invitation.

Before we can move forward, we must be willing to stop and recognize where we are. God meets us in that honest place—not to shame us, but to extend grace, restore our relationship with Him, and reveal the way forward.

Sometimes, however, we don’t realize how far we’ve drifted because the distractions of life are so subtle. We can begin with a clear sense of God’s calling and, somewhere along the way, become preoccupied with the cares, responsibilities, and voices around us.

Then God asks another kind of question: Will you go?

Isaiah experienced such a moment. In a vision, he heard the Lord ask, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” (Isaiah 6:8, ESV).

Isaiah didn’t have a five-year plan. He didn’t know every detail of what lay ahead. He simply heard the voice of God and responded, “Here I am! Send me.”

Perhaps God is asking you a question today.

Where are you?

Or perhaps He is asking, Where will you go?

Pause long enough to listen. Be honest enough to answer. And when His voice calls you forward, be willing to respond.

The right voice will lead you toward the right choice.

And when that voice is the voice of God, you can trust where He leads—even when you cannot yet see the road ahead.

TODAY’S MORE TO LIFE MOMENT

Find a quiet place today and allow yourself a few uninterrupted moments with God. Ask Him:

  • Where am I spiritually right now?
  • Is there anything I am hiding from God or avoiding with Him?
  • Have distractions or the cares of life pulled me away from His direction?
  • What is God asking me to surrender, change, or pursue?
  • Am I willing to respond, like Isaiah, “Here I am! Send me”?

Don’t be afraid of God’s questions. They may be the very thing that leads you out of hiding, back into His presence, and toward the purpose He has prepared for you.

Prayer

Lord, help me to be still enough to hear Your voice and honest enough to answer Your questions. Show me where I am, and if I have wandered from Your direction, gently lead me back. Remove the distractions that compete for my attention and give me courage to follow You. When You call, let my heart be ready to say, “Here I am. Send me.” Amen.
