I didn’t expect the loneliness.

When the world shut down, people took sides, cultural wars raged in our homes, and bombs fell halfway across the globe, I wasn’t prepared for the deep sense of isolation that followed.

I’ve never needed a great deal of social interaction, but loneliness still found me, catching me off guard with its intensity. What was I longing for? It wasn’t so much companionship as it was comfort.

In this prolonged season of upheaval, relief can feel out of reach. Just when we think things might improve, they seem to worsen—more losses, more insecurity, more uncertainty. We pick ourselves up and try to carry on, only to be knocked down again. The barrage of bad news, the erosion of moral values, the opposition to God’s Word, and the attacks on our families come so quickly that we barely have time to process one crisis before the next arrives.

This kind of exhaustion can leave us drowning in loneliness. Constant turmoil creates a sense of isolation, even when we’re all experiencing it together. Whether emotional, physical, or spiritual, loneliness can become a prison that confines us and dominates our thoughts. It convinces us we are alone in our grief, separated from others by our pain. Carrying our burdens alone, we begin to believe no one else could possibly understand them.

But God understands.

David knew what it meant to feel lonely and afflicted. Though he was a mighty warrior and king, he wasn’t afraid to bring his deepest struggles before the Lord. He prayed:

“My eyes are ever on the Lord, for only he will release my feet from the snare. Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. Relieve the troubles of my heart and free me from my anguish.” (Psalm 25:15–17, NIV)

David’s honesty encourages me. He didn’t hide his loneliness behind a position of strength or pretend his troubles weren’t weighing on him. Instead, he turned his eyes toward the Lord and openly acknowledged his need for help.

Perhaps that is where healing begins—not by denying our loneliness, but by bringing it honestly before God. We can tell Him when we feel overwhelmed, when the world seems unbearably heavy, and when we long for the comfort that circumstances cannot provide. We don’t have to find the right words or muster enough strength to face everything on our own. God invites us to come to Him as we are.

And sometimes, His comfort comes through the people He places in our lives. A conversation, a prayer, a listening ear, or the simple reminder that someone cares can help lift the weight we’ve been carrying. Sharing our struggles with God and with trusted believers reminds us that loneliness does not have to define our lives.

We may not be able to quiet the turmoil around us, but we can turn our attention to the One who remains steadfast through every storm. Our circumstances may change without warning, but God’s presence does not depend on the stability of our world.

Whatever you’re facing today, let this truth settle deep in your heart: You are not alone. The Lord sees you, hears your prayers, and knows the burdens you carry. When loneliness threatens to overwhelm you, turn your eyes toward Him. You may still have difficult days ahead, but you do not have to walk through them without His comfort and grace.

Prayer

Lord, when loneliness and uncertainty overwhelm me, remind me of Your unfailing presence. Comfort my heart, ease my burdens, and help me find strength in You. Give me courage to reach out to others and grace to encourage those who feel alone. Thank You for walking with me through every season. In Jesus’ name, amen.
